Thanks to youtube, I've discovered some 70's/80's songs that I'd never heard, and I'm in love!
The Psychedelic Furs - Heaven
Gang Of Four - Damaged Goods
The Cult - Rain
Moon Unit Zappa - Valley Girl (like OMG i'm like so in love with this song, y'know? fer shure!)
New Order - Crystal (although not 80's, still an AMAZING song! I know its the video where The Killers took their name from - from the band that was in the video. Awesome).
And today I decided to look up a band that I'd heard of but never actually heard. The Revillos/Rezillos. They're AMAZING! Kind of kooky in a B-52's way, very 60's inspired. I'm totally loving it!

While cruising around town yesterday running my weekly errands (I work Wed-Sun, so my errand running day is Tues), I was listening to a CD I made called Good R&R. It is essentially classic rock from the 70s, with a song from 60s & a couple from the 80s. Pretty pedestrian stuff that's heard on radio stations everywhere. But they are songs I really never really get tired of listening to. The track list is on the Favorites Board.

Moon Unit Zappa - Valley Girl (like OMG i'm like so in love with this song, y'know? fer shure!) Like totally. I used to have fun talking like that sometimes in college (when that song was popular), and the guy I was dating got me an iron-on transfer (which I put on a sweatshirt) that said "Gag me with a spoon". LOL! BTW, you said this was on YouTube (YouTube is great, isn't it?)--is it a regular MTV-style video, a montage of pics, or what?

I often do the same thing after reading about something on line. Not long ago, some of us here were discussing "Town Without Pity"--and not long after that, I went over to amazon.com and got Gene Pitney's "Anthology 1961-1968". Plus I've been singing that song for karaoke quite a bit (in a different key--most karaoke systems can change the key of a song if you need it)--not an easy song to sing, but I'm getting pretty good at it. I'm impressed, Laura! I think that is an incredibly hard song to sing. The progressions aren't at all "usual." It's very easy to hit the wrong note. I concur - there are some very challenging chord changes and melodic runs in that song.

I was a freshman in high school when that song came out in 1982, and I remember the Valley Girl craze was very huge at the time. The movie is great, too. Whenever I watch the party scene at the beginning, it's like looking at my own high school days - especially those bright polo shirts with the turned up collars!

I agree, Woody - there are certain songs that, no matter how often they're played or how many years pass, still hold up very well.

Yesterday I was listening to Three Dog Night's American Pasttime, their album from 1976. I hadn't been familiar with it at all until recently - but was pleasantly surprised, as even without Danny Hutton, the band sounds very good.

Here's the link to the video: youtube.com/watch?v=5M9aY7hXjGU LOL I talk like a valley girl sometimes. In high school I used to say "like" a LOT and my friends and I joked that I was a ditz (hence the ditzybrunette screen name lol). And now I have an inside joke with my boyfriend about how I talk like a "val" and we both say stuff like "I am sure!" "toooootally" "Fer shure!". Our friends think we're insane, its so much fun! Some great discoveries, Viki! It's been awhile since I've heard Valley Girl, but I have it on LP and mp3. I often wish that I was in high school in the 80's. Everything back then seems a lot more creative and interesting than when I was in high school (late 90's/early 2000's). I actually get pretty jealous of people who grew up in the late 70's/early 80's. I think for my birthday I'm going to ask my parents for a time machine so I can go back to those days!

I can relate, Viki - there are often times I wish I had been born about 10 years earlier, so I could have experienced the '60s and very early '70s firsthand. The '80s were an interesting time, though - in some ways, similar to today, but in other ways, very different. You've given me a good idea for a post topic, especially for the party!

Very cool find, JP - I hadn't realized there was a station devoted to doo-wop and early R&B. It looks like they play a nice selection of artists!

This morning, I've been listening to tracks from Orpheus's self-titled album. Pete made a post about this group several years ago, and introduced me to their music. Great songs, especially Congress Alley and I'll Stay With You.
