Ok, I thought I'd add to the party by starting a new feature!
It's easy to make a "hate" list of songs. Just go to the Michael Bolton bin at the local store.....
But how about songs you HATE by artists that you otherwise like?
The first featured artist-Eric Clapton
There's actually a few for me. I've never been big on I Shot the Sheriff. And Wonderful Tonight is about to strike oil it's been drilled so far into the ground.
But the one song I cannot STAND and have not liked since it came out-It's in the Way That You Use it. UGH!! (Maybe that will be a requirement-you have to insert an UGH!)
I actually thought of this feature today in the shower (settle down ladies!) when this song came on. It's just so...forced. And the thing is, for the most part, I like the rest of August.
I think part of it was the video-that overrated Tom Cruise around a pool table acting like a hot-shot.
Anyway, I never liked this one, and really hate that it gets classic rock play over some of his other ones, like Mainline Florida, Motherless Children and August's own Behind the Mask.
Your opinion? (Hate this song? Love it? Got a different EC song you can't stand? Don't like him at all?)
BTW-going to watch a movie with the family, so I'll be back a little later!!

I too am not overly fond of It's In the Way That You Use It. It seems a little formulaic compared with a lot of Clapton's other work, and hasn't aged well with me over time. On the other hand, Run from that same album is great.
I used to like Wonderful Tonight, but you are right Adam, it's been horribly overplayed. I still like I Shot the Sheriff, but Mark doesn't - he always asks to change the station when it comes on the car radio.

The only Clapton song I can think of that I don't like is his cover of Willie and The Hand Jive - ugh - it has nothing going for it in my opinion.
I can't believe it was released as a single, I heard it courtesy of Ktel's Sound Spectacular

Good topic, Adam!
(Damn, but it's good to talk music with you and Pete again!)
I've always really liked Wonderful Tonight despite it being overplayed and learning that Eric wrote it when he was pissed at his wife for being late. But (and maybe its sacrilege to say it) Tears in Heaven has really gotten old. I know he wrote it for his late son, and it's a real tear jerker, but once you get past that -- have you ever listened to the lyrics? It must have taken him all of 45 seconds to write them.
I've gone from liking the song for its sentiment to not liking it much at all.

For me, the Eric Clapton song that I have a hard time trying to like is Layla. Now, don't scream blasphemy or anything like that. It's just a song that I really don't particularly care for.
The fact that I knew a girl named Layla who was a total bitch didn't help matters much. ;D
But, I also hate "I Shot The Sheriff". My ears bleed thinking about it.

Well, Eric is my favorite artist, so it's hard to find fault with anything he does. But I do agree with what Dawn says about It's In the Way That You Use It. It's not one of his best. And I've always loved Tears in Heaven, but maybe it's run it's course. Eric doesn't do it in his concerts anymore.

I never cared for his acoustic re-working of "Layla"...it was a noble experiment, but A: it doesn't work; B: it touched off the horrid "Unplugged" fad.

But (and maybe its sacrilege to say it) Tears in Heaven has really gotten old. No, that's not really sacrilege, Ed. It did get overplayed, as many songs do (even really sincere and well-intentioned songs--"We are the World", anyone?). I actually like "It's in the Way that You Use It". "Let it Rain" is my favorite of his, though.

I am in agreement with the whole "unplugged" period. While it was interesting to hear "Layla" the first time or two, it should have been a "one off for the show" performance. Then it was overplayed to death and soon after it seemed that a whole slew of new songs that were performed unplugged were released. While one song or two of this type on an album is fine, what I loved about Clapton was his powerful electric guitar sound as well as his energy level. Both the "Journeyman" and "Behind the Sun" albums rocked in my opinion, and granted he did suffer tragedy in his life afterwards which probably had alot to do with the "toning down"....but to drop down from a legendary guitar hero to a dull songster took alot of the magic away for me.
