Well, back again for Season four!
This weeks artist is:
Slade
What would the 70's have been without them? Well, Americans know the answer best, since success in the states basically eluded them throught the 70's. In England, however, the band racked up hit after hit, and were one of the most commercially successful bands, creating glam rock that would eventually pave the way for glam metal in the 80's.
The quartet of vocalist Noddy Holder, guitarist Dave Hill, bassist Jim Lea, and drummer Don Powell, formed as the N'Betweens in the mid 60's and later changed their name to Ambrose Slade, which would be shorted to Slade by the release of their second album. Their 1971 single "Coz I Luv You" went to #1 in England, which set off a string of top 10 hits between 1971-75. Among them "Look Wot You Dun", "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "Gudbuy T' Jane", "Cum on Feel the Noize", "Skweeze Me Pleeze Me", and "Merry Xmas Everybody".
The band wouldn't see American success, however, until the early 80's, when a young band called Quiet Riot stormed up the charts with a cover of "Cum On Feel The Noize". Perhaps this generated interest in Slade, who just happened to be releasing an album at this time. "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" yielded two Top 40 hits, "Run Runaway", and "My Oh My".
Unfortunately, two more albums found little success, and the band broke up in 1992. The band reformed with only Dave Hill and Don Powell from the classic lineup. This version of Slade continues to this day, with a revolving door of bassists and vocalists.
Sure, they weren't successful in the U.S., but with the number of bands they inspired, they SHOULD be in the Hall Of Fame. Maybe they will someday......
