An experience I had over the weekend inspired this thread idea.
The "Jack Radio" they play in the Jack in the Box restaurants is usually very eclectic, with quite a few songs I'm not familiar with, especially the newer ones. Mark and I were getting breakfast there yesterday, and a song came on which intrigued me. The style of the song and vocals sounded very Beatle-esque. It was quite noisy in the restaurant, so I wasn't able to catch many of the lyrics, but I figured the title was something like "Standing next to me" since they repeated it several times. So, I Googled it, and sure enough, the song turned out to be Standing Next to Me by the Last Shadow Puppets. Very cool song I probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise!
Have any of you ever had a similar experience of discovering great new music in an unexpected setting?

Have any of you ever had a similar experience of discovering great new music in an unexpected setting? Last Shadow Puppets, huh? Is Lynn their lead singer? ;D Did you actually find the song somewhere or just the reference to it? As for me, the thing that comes to mind was back in the early spring of 2005, I was home recuperating from pneumonia, and was still feeling pretty weak. I watched a lot of TV then; couldn't do much else, and they kept playing this commercial - I think for iPod. But anyway, it featured the Blue Man group doing all of their typical gyrations to a song I had never heard. Now - I never listen to commercials, and this song was kinda electro-pop, again I'm usually not into that kind of music - but like I said, I was still weak from the pneumonia. After hearing the song a few times I could tell they were saying something containing the word "jerk". So with googling jerk and blue man and ipod, eventually I found the song. It was "Jerk It Out" by The Caesars. I found the song and downloaded it. Not a great song, but I give it some credit for helping me get over pneumonia.

Nope, this is just guys, one of the members of the Arctic Monkeys and another from the Rascals. I'd never heard of the group before, but I'm curious to hear more of their stuff. They seem to be more popular in Britain. From the way they appear in the video, that Beatle-esque sound was no accident! I found a Youtube clip of the song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8YRx47oylM . There's also a live version of it posted there. I didn't recognize Jerk It Out by the title, but I Youtubed it, and I think I vaguely remember hearing it in a commercial, probably the same one you mentioned.

I checked out that Last Shadow Puppets YouTube site, Dawn. That's not a bad song at all. The notes say that it's from this past summer. Must be a reformed Rascals group - those guys look pretty young. Like '60s vintage Beatles.

I was just playing the clip on YouTube, and my husband said, "What are you listening to?" I replied, "Well, someone I know online has the exact same musical taste as me, and being that she loves this song, I just HAD to check it out!" And I do agree that it's a very cool song. I had to laugh, though, as I thought if I squinted hard enough, I could swear those two guys were Paul and George circa 1964. (Even though they didn't sound like them, they definitely were Beatlesque.)
