Ok, let's try another round of songs. As before, here is the scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A"meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! ;D Dust in the Wind - Kansas 4.0 Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap 3.25 Eleanor Rigby - Beatles 5.0 (amazing song; love the string arrangement) Eye in the Sky - Alan Parsons Project 4.0 Stars on 45 Medley (Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar...) - Stars on 45 3.5 (some of this song is a bit cheesy, but I have to give it kudos for first introducing me to some Beatles songs, especially No Reply and I'll Be Back, which are among my absolute Beatles faves today. *Edit: I just revised this rating - on second look, my original rating was a bit too generous). Surfin' Safari - Beach Boys 3.0 (a lowish ranking, considering how much I like the group, but I tend to like their 1965-73 era stuff best) I'm Not in Love - 10cc 4.85 Greatest Love of All - Whitney Houston 1.35 (this was my high school graduation theme! Wish they'd come up with something better!) Because - Dave Clark Five 3.25 We Are Family - Sister Sledge 4.0 Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley 3.25 Borderline - Madonna 3.5 Groovin - Young Rascals 4.25 One of These Nights - Eagles 5.0 Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stones 3.5

Dust in the Wind - Kansas - In my Top 500 4.5 Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap - IMO, his weakest song of those I am familiar with 2.9 Eleanor Rigby - Beatles - It did admittedly produce a couple "what was that all about" s but I never got that much into it. 3.5 (I agree about the strings though.) Eye in the Sky - Alan Parsons Project Never really a fan. 3.0 Stars on 45 Medley (Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar...) - Stars on 45 This song struck me as some DJ saying Hey I'm gonna make my own mix. I'll start with Venus, then Sugar Sugar and now i can't think of anything else except Beatles songs. -- Then why even include Venus and Sugar Sugar? Rather silly, I think. 1.75 Surfin' Safari - Beach Boys - I always loved the Beach Boys harmonies, so I really do love a lot of their early stuff. But after Surfin' and Surfin' USA couldn't you do a song that DIDN'T start with the letters S-U-R-F 3.3 I'm Not in Love - 10cc I think we talked about this song about 5 years ago, and I said I liked the song, but I really liked the line about the picture hiding the ugly stain. Great line!! 4.0 Greatest Love of All - Whitney Houston 1 E -10. (0.0000000001) Because - Dave Clark Five. Back in the day this was pleasurable as a ballad from a group that were fairly hard rockers for the mid '60s. But when Oldies radio stations first caught on, this was the ONLY DC5 song they'd play! And they'd play it over and over and over and over. Wait a minute - that's another DC5 song! (Over and Over, I mean. I give Because a 2.3 thanks to the DJs. We Are Family - Sister Sledge 3.2 Never cared that much for the style, but it reminds me of the 1979 World Series. Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley This is the song that launched Skinny Elvis to the top!! It will make my top 500 4.5 Borderline - Madonna One of my two favorite Madonna songs 3.8 Groovin - Young Rascals - Another good song that got SO overplayed as an oldie. 3.5 One of These Nights - Eagles My favorite band, and this is a great song, but there are probably 10 or 12 other Eagles songs that I like better. 4.0 Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stoes - It's a good song if I don't think about the restaurant. 3.4

Come to think of it, it's the only DC5 song the oldies stations around here seem to play - and maybe Glad All Over once in a blue moon, but that's about it. I can't even remember the last time I heard Can't You See That She's Mine or some of the other hits on the radio. Would you believe they have been playing Groovin' on the L.A. smooth jazz station? That song has nothing to do with jazz! It's a great song, but getting maybe a bit overexposed. LOL about the restaurant!

I/m not a jazz fan, so I probably don't know what I am talking about, but isn't "smooth jazz" kind of a fusion genre where it's really jazz melded with maybe easy listening or adult contemporary music? I've seen fusion genres before (although I can't think of one right now) - maybe country rock or country R&B - where the play lists are rather strange, because they really don't know what the "rules" are. Maybe in this case, if smooth jazz is indeed a blending with AC, the DJs thuink they can play a song that's 99% AC and 1% jazz. Just a thought.

They play some instrumentals that are closer in style to traditional jazz but a little more pop-oriented, but they also play "jazzy" pop/rock songs like Boz Scaggs' Lowdown, Ambrosia's Biggest Part of Me, Michael McDonald, etc. It used to be about a 70/30 balance in favor of the jazz stuff, but here lately it seems to be tipping more toward the pop/AC songs. It seems like a lot of radio stations are moving more and more away from specific formats and into this "one size fits all" conglomeration, where every station starts to sound alike.

Oh, it doesn't surprise me. It's been going that way for a while now. I guess the stations' programming staff are trying to draw in as many listeners (and as much ad revenue!) as possible, and they think a more general playlist is the way to do it. They may be right...but it doesn't make for much variety.

Dust in the Wind - Kansas 4.0 (That's all we are!) Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap 3.0 Eleanor Rigby - Beatles 5.0 (Durned tootin'! Eye in the Sky - Alan Parsons Project 4.0 (This song brings back good memories. I think I like the memories better than the song....so I don't know if 4.0 is accurate.) Stars on 45 Medley (Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar...) 1.5 (I so remember this from when I was eleven or so. I had to listen to it again just to refresh my memory. I never remember the beginning being so discofied! Then again, I think back then, our ears were used to that sound.... Dawn, I'm frightened to say that this was a introduction to a few Beatles songs for me, too. Fortunately, it wasn't "them", but still... The guy who does "John" is actually pretty good at mimicking his voice.) Surfin' Safari - Beach Boys 3.0 I'm Not in Love - 10cc 3.50 Greatest Love of All - Whitney Houston 0.0 (I didn't know if you can rate lower than 1.0, but I just have.) Because - Dave Clark Five 4.5 (A happy innocent 60s song that reminds me of when the world was a bit groovier---an added 1/2 point for the organ solo.) We Are Family - Sister Sledge 3.0 Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley 3.0 Borderline - Madonna 2.5 Groovin - Young Rascals 4.5 (Oh yeah...on a Sunday afternoon!) One of These Nights - Eagles 5.0 Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stones 4.5 (Reminds me of being a teenager, stringing love beads on my bedroom floor, wishing it was 1968 instead of 1988.)

Dust in the Wind - Kansas 4.5 Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & the Union Gap 3.0 Eleanor Rigby - Beatles 5.0 - I also love the string arrangement, so I was very happy with the "strings only" version included on Anthology 2. George Martin was (and is) a very talented guy. Eye in the Sky - Alan Parsons Project 5.0 Just great! Stars on 45 Medley (Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar...) 4.0 - I really liked this when I first heard it, and I bought the 45. Every so often I give it a spin. Surfin' Safari - Beach Boys 4.0 This was one of the first tracks I heard by the band when I was little - still a big fave! I'm Not in Love - 10cc - 5.0 I love everything about this, the vocal arrangment, the overall sound of the recording. Well done all around! Greatest Love of All - Whitney Houston 1.0 Not a fan. I find her music to be too "over the top" Because - Dave Clark Five - 5.0 We Are Family - Sister Sledge 3.5 I remember when I DJ'd weddings, this was always very, very popular. Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley 5.0 Borderline - Madonna 1.5 The only song I can actually say that I like of Madonna's is True Blue. Groovin - Young Rascals 5.0 One of These Nights - Eagles 5.0 Still love it, I remember buying the 45 back in '75, unfortunately at some point, it became badly warped and unplayable. Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stones 5.0

I agree that Stars on 45 does seem very disco-ish in retrospect, especially the extended version (although I prefer the 45 version). The "Paul" and "George" vocalists weren't as convincing, but the "John" singer did have a similar timbre to his voice as Lennon. Ruby Tuesday - you and I are so much alike in that respect! I've often said that I wish I'd been born in 1958 instead of 1968, or even a few years before '58. It must have been awesome to have experienced the culture of the '60s firsthand.

Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stones 5.0 I agree that the strings-only arrangement of Eleanor Rigby is great, too. I'd always liked the song, but after hearing that arrangement, it made me appreciate the song even more. I'm with you on Whitney. She had vocal talent, at least back then, but instead of showing some restraint and just singing a song, almost everything had to be peppered with these piercing notes and over-the-top vocal runs. Unfortunately, that set the stage for a lot of the singers that came after.
