[Dawn]

Let's look at another round of songs. Our scale:

5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites
4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot
3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it
2.0 - A"meh" song, you could take it or leave it
1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off!

Lowdown - Boz Scaggs 5.0
(I really love Boz's stuff from this period; great blend of styles)

Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics 3.5
(I still like this, but a little less than I did when it was popular)

Walk On By - Dionne Warwick 3.75

Magic - Pilot 5.0
(I've seen this described as the "best McCartney song McCartney never did". It does sound very Macca-esque - love it)

You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins 3.0

Wishin' and Hopin' - Dusty Springfield 3.25

(good song - in fact, I probably like it better now than I did back then, but they had even better ones)

(Reminds me of being a teenager when my sister (a Duranimal) and I would have volume wars between the wall that separated our bedrooms. Her ammunition was Duran Duran and mine was the Beatles or the Monkees.)

One of my least favorite Supremes songs, and Phil doesn't even do it justice.

Love the Bee Gees. This isn't their best, but it's right up there.

Read my discription for Walk On By. This one is jhust a smidge better.

Never a big fan of theirs. Not a bad song though.

I'm sorry. The Osmond Brothers were a joke. Hey we have a group of black little boys (Jackson 5) now we need to have an equal white group. I never bought into them. On that plain, for them, this was an above average song.

Eternal Flame - Bangles 4.7
#53 on my all time list, and my favorite by the Bangles.

Ready to Take A Chance Again - Barry Manilow 2.9
Baqrry is a guilty pleasure of mine. I really love maybe a dozen of his songs. This is not one of them.

Mr. Roboto - Styx 2.2
Ugh!

Bernadette - Four Tops 3.7
Love the Tops. This is not in my top 5 of theirs though.

Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin 3.85
A great tune. A few years ago I saw an excellent documentary about Bobby on PBS, and even though I knew a few of the tunes, seeing it made me want to check out his stuff a little more in depth. As far as my #1 favorite of his, it's a toss up between "If I Were a Carpenter" (which I remember being used in an episode of The Wonder Years, remember that?) and "Beyond The Sea."

Still awesome! The entire Silk Degrees album still sounds fantastic to this day.

Walk On By - Dionne Warwick 4.4
This was the first song of Dionne's that I heard when I was little, back around '74 ( I still have the compilation album called "Can't Stop Dancin!"). I don't listen to it all that often, but when I do, it's still enjoyable.

Magic - Pilot 5.0
I listen to this all the time. A classic 70's slice of power pop.

I bought the 45 back in '79, a really nice ballad.

Not a huge fan of the guys, although I thought "Hungry Like The Wolf " was good. I like this a little more now, than I did at the time. Whenever I hear this song, I always think of the time they performed it at Live Aid. I remember the band were having sound problems (mic feedback etc) and on top of that at one point Simon attempted a high note and flubbed it making a high pitched "eeee" sound !

A Very good track, that still sounds good today - IMO.

Eternal Flame - Bangles - 4.9
An excellent ballad, well sung by Susanna I was always (and still am) a big fan of the ladies, the only mistake they made was recording "Walk Like an Egyptian." I found out later courtesy of "Behind The Music" that, even the band hated "Egyptian."

Ready to Take A Chance Again - Barry Manilow 4.0
I didn't recognize the title, so I went and found an audio sample. Very nice.

Mr. Roboto - Styx 1.0
At the time, I thought it was just ok. However, over the years, the song has not aged well at all. I find it unlistenable. I was listening to my Styx compilation I have awhile back, and when it came around to this, I had to skip it. I'm still a big fan of the guys, I love 'em but this song is just BAD.

Listening to Too Much Heaven brings back a lot of memories of childhood for me, too, particularly around Christmas '78. Hard to believe that's been over 30 years ago now!

Chicago's early stuff is great, I agree. I remember getting a cassette called If You Leave Me Now - a hits collection - back in my junior year of high school and just about wearing it out! They're still one of my favorite groups today.

LOL about the Osmonds! Some of their stuff could be a little cheesy, but surprisingly, they could really rock out at times. Some of their deeper album cuts are a lot more interesting than the hits.

I think if I were to make a favorites list, Magic would be way up there for me as well. I remember hearing it on an oldies station in 1987 after not having heard it since its heyday, and I was so tickled to hear it again. Pilot made some great music, and should have had more hits.

I love Dusty's voice, but I think what brings the song down for me a bit is the arrangement. Still a pleasant listen, though.

Another Barry fan here. Ready to Take a Chance Again is nice, but not quite as memorable as some of his others.

That's too bad that they had all those sound problems with the Live Aid set, as apart from the feedback whines and the missed note, it's a very good performance.

I agree, that would have been great to have played Feelin' Stronger Every Day in band! I don't think we had any Chicago sheet music, but we did play Hey Jude, which was cool.

I must admit, Mr. Roboto was a misstep, and I agree, it hasn't aged well. I'm thinking I was probably too generous in my rating, although it does bring back some good memories.
