Here is another round of songs to consider and rate. Our scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A"meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! 1999 - Prince 3.75 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver 3.5 (this was a very popular song where I grew up, not far from the WV border. I have a tape of a cousin and I singing this with great gusto when we were about 9. ;D) Eight Days A Week - Beatles 4.0 All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers 3.0 Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John 5.0 Fields of Gold - Sting 1.85 (I like some of Sting's solo work, but this never appealed as much, and it was very overplayed to boot) Overkill - Men at Work 3.5 (probably my least favorite of their hits; still like it, though) Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes 3.0 Ventura Highway - America 5.0 (huge, huge favorite of mine) Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood 2.25 Peg - Steely Dan 4.25 Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan 3.5 We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) - Tina Turner 1.5 Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon 3.0 Turn Your Love Around - George Benson 4.25

1999 - Prince 3.2 I've never been a Prince fan, but there are 3 or 4 songs that I like. This is one of them. Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver 4.1 I like the song a lot in itself. It also brings back some fond memories, as it was the first song I ever learned to play on my guitar. Back then I was visting my folks one weekend and brought my guitar along. I fumbled through playing and singing this song for them. Then my dad says 'go ahead and play something else; maybe it will be better.' LOL!! That little memory brings the song to the edge of my Top 500. May be in, may be out. BTW, Dawn, that tape of you and your cousin represents a rare collectors item: preteen Dawnie!! Must be worth a fortune! Next time we get together I'll bring my guitar and you can sing it for us. ;D Eight Days A Week - Beatles 3.3 I think of four songs that came out more or less at the same time after the first huge Beatles wave had died. I knew them as two double sided 45s Eight days A Week/I Don't Want To Spoil the Party and I Feel Fine/She's A Woman. I always have thought that these four songs were inferior to most of what the Beatles recorded both earlier and later. But then again, it was still The Beatles. All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers 4.2 Love this one. Memories of being 14 years old, and me and my buddy Steve were riding our bikes about 10 miles or so across town to meet up with a couple of girls. Top 500 and #2 Everly Brothers hit for me. Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John 3.2 This just seemed like such a weird song. Then I found out that Elton had recorded it for Billie Jean King, who at the time was playing for the World Team Tennis "Philadelphia Freedoms" (No joke.) Fields of Gold - Sting 1.7 I've never been a Sting fan. There's nothing by him I really like much, and this is worse than most. Overkill - Men at Work 2.3 Nah. Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes 3.0 Not a big Supremes fan, but I sort of like most of their songs. This one is decent. Ventura Highway - America 3.3 Decent; I like some of their songs more though. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood 2.8 Not bad, but it sounds like every other Steve Winwood song. Peg - Steely Dan 2.4 Again- not a big fan. Some good songs, but this one is close to the bottom for me. It took me several listens to know they were saying "Peg". Were they singing it to someones wooden leg? Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan 1.7 I think I've said before that there are very few Donovan songs that I am neutral to. I love a few; more-or-less cant stand the rest. This is in the latter category. We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) - Tina Turner 2.0 I recognize Tina's talent, but I was very happy when her 15 minutes in the brightest star spotlight (maybe 25 years ago) was over. Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon 2.8 Decent song, that I might have liked more if Freddy had ever learned to sing. Turn Your Love Around - George Benson 3.1 Pleasant.

LOL at your dad's comment about Take Me Home, Country Roads! ;D Cool memory, Ed! Well, I'm not sure how collectible it is, but in addition to the John Denver track, that circa 1977 tape of mine also contains my cousin Frank's rendition of Hawaiian Rainbows, complete with three false starts (he kept messing up the first verse ;D), and a solo by me of I'll Call Him Bambi. I've always loved Philadelphia Freedom, but it wasn't until fairly recently that I found out the tennis connection; for years I thought it had something to do with the Bicentennial that was upcoming back then. Some of the lyrics are head-scratchers, though - what is the "whipporwill of freedom"?

1999 - Prince 3.75 I've mentioned this before, at the time, I grew tired of Prince's music very quickly, because he seemed to be everywhere. Over the years though I've warmed up to many of the tunes again. Now having said that, I still think "Kiss" and "Batdance" were (and still are) terrible, awful songs. Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver 3.5 Remember hearing this often, when I was little. Eight Days A Week - Beatles 5.0 Simply awesome! All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers 4.5 Beautiful harmonies, and a great all around song from Phil and Don. Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John 5.0 A big fave then and now, bought the 45 back in '75 while on vacation in Disneyland. At the time, I had no idea what the song was about, I just liked it. It wasn't until a few years back when I was watching an interview with Elton and he mentioned, the song was about Billie Jean King. Fields of Gold - Sting 3.0 Not a huge fan of his solo work, but quite a few of the songs are quite good. Overkill - Men at Work 4.O I am still very fond of this. Back in High School, a buddy of mine bought both Business as Usual and Cargo on vinyl and we listened to them a lot. I still think the songs very good today. I have quite a few of the hits on various mix tapes. Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes 3.9 Overplayed, but then again, I guess you can say that about quite a few of their songs. I still like it however. Ventura Highway - America 5.0 Same here Dawn, along with Sister Golden Hair, I Need You etc, etc. Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood 4.3 Peg - Steely Dan 4.75 I just gave Aja a spin last night. Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan 4.5 We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) - Tina Turner 1.0 Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon 4.0 Turn Your Love Around - George Benson 3.5

I too grew a little tired of his music back then, especially when Purple Rain came out, but have warmed up to it again. Except for Kiss and Batdance - I agree, those are not good at all. Yikes. I was listening to some random tracks on the computer yesterday, and Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive was one of them. Men at Work's songs do seem to have aged pretty well. Aja is great, one of my favorite albums!

Elton does have an impressive catalog, I agree. Lots of good songs by him, especially his early-to-mid '70s work. It's looking like We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) is going to be our bottom pick. Tina is talented, and I like a few of her comeback songs, but this one sends me running for the off button.

I have Business as Usual and Cargo, but haven't heard much from their third album. How are those tracks? Looks like we have very similar views on quite a few of the songs!

1999 - Prince 3.0 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver 3.0 (This song also reminds me of my childhood. My mom had the "Greatest Hits" album and used to play this song quite a bit.) Eight Days A Week - Beatles 5.0 (How can I not give this song anything but a 5?) All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers 3.0 (Sweet innocence) Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John 3.0 Fields of Gold - Sting 1.0 (I really only like Sting from the Police. The rest seems too mellow for my taste. He lost his edge.) Overkill - Men at Work 3.0 Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes 3.0 Ventura Highway - America 5.0 (Oh yeah! I can never drive through L.A. without singing this song. Feelin' good song.) Back in the High Life Again - Steve Winwood 3.5 Peg - Steely Dan 5.0 Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan 3.0 (This one reminds me of my senior year of high school-) We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome) - Tina Turner 0.0 (Not a big Tina fan, and this song just lacked zest) Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon 3.0 Turn Your Love Around - George Benson 4.5 (Again, another song that reminded me of being "young". This song came out around the time I got my first am/fm alarm clock and I heard it quite a bit since I pretty much played that thing 24/7. Good memories.)

I agree, Ventura Highway is perfect at capturing that L.A. vibe, and great driving music! I always crank it way up in the car when it comes on. Oh yes, I remember hearing Turn Your Love Around a lot as well back when it came out. Back then, I didn't have a stereo with a cassette player yet, so I used to put my portable cassette recorder next to the clock radio and record songs that way. I still have a few of those tapes, and Turn Your Love Around is one of the songs on there.
