Thought it might be cool to take a look at some '60s songs that you don't hear very often, if at all, on oldies radio. Here are two by the Association.
The first is Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies, from 1966. It was a top 40 hit, but just barely. I'm guessing it didn't get much airplay back in the day - maybe too "dark" sounding for AM hit radio? I first heard it several years ago, and it's my favorite from them.
The second one is Time for Livin', from 1968. This also just barely made the top 40. It's a nice pop song, very much of the time - it's a shame it wasn't a bigger hit.

I had "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" on a Nuggets compilation a long time ago. I agree---good song, but one that might have been a bit too dark for AM radio. I absolutely LOVE "Time For Livin'". That was kind of my theme song back in my late teens when I kind of found my niche and stopped dwelling on my years in Jr. High. I got their greatest hits album when I was about 16 and played that song over and over, thinking, "They know how I FEEL!" Another lesser known song (off that album, in fact) that I really like is "Everything That Touches You."

I remember the title, "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", because I used to read Bullboard - I mean - Billboard religiously back then, but I'm not sure if I ever heard the song before. It's definitely dark, but I do like it. Conversely, the title "Time For Livin' " didn't sound familar at all, but when I heard the song, I remembered it quite well. A lot of Mamas and Papas influence there, I think. In fact, when you think about it, there were at least a few late '60s groups that were very heavily influenced by the Mamas and Papas including Association, Spanky and Our Gang, and the Cowsills.

I've heard it quite often on oldies stations. Also, from memory, I think it was a top 10 song. Now I'll look. ......... .... Hah! Peaked at #10!! I still got it!! This is one of those songs where I like most of it, but one part ruins it for me. They have this big build-up on Ev-ry-thing-that-touuuuuu-ches-yooooooo, and then they have this little cutesy repetition of "love" about 20 times. I just don't like that arrangement. - But that's just me. Don't tell Silent Ninja. He might come over and lock the thread. ;D

But I'll bet Lynn does. Our now defunct oldies station never played it, either. Or maybe they did when I was asleep. I dunno. They weren't much into the Association, except for "Windy" and "Cherish". Now they're really into "talk".

There's something so carefree and appealing about it. It sounds like we first discovered the song at about the same time - I was 18 when I got their greatest hits album after seeing them in concert. I can definitely relate about finding your niche! Back in the late '80s/early '90s I would hear Everything That Touches You occasionally on the oldies stations, but not much in recent years. Very nice song, I agree.

I remember seeing the Pandora title in Whitburn years before I knew it, and thinking it would be more of a novelty song, so I was kind of surprised when I actually heard it for the first time. I agree with you about those groups having a strong Mamas & Papas influence. Another one would be the 5th Dimension.

I haven't heard Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies for quite sometime. A buddy that I went to High School with and I would spend almost every weekend looking for records. At one point he was buying various albums and 45's of The Association including "Pandora's" we both really liked it. Neither of us had heard it before
I have not heard "Time For Livin'" before, but it's really good! It has that "sunshine pop" sound to it.

Yes, there are some really good deeper tracks on those albums. It's a shame oldies radio only plays maybe three songs or so of their catalog. I have a definite soft spot for the sunshine pop style! I'm always on the lookout for new songs and artists.

I got the "Pandora's etc" 45 when it came out. Just about my fave Association song, tho the lead singer starts off too flat and nasal, but picks it up quickly. Didn't care for the other one- too bubblegummy. I haven't heard either song on the radio in decades.
My other fave "lost" Association song would be "No Fair at All".

I'd never really noticed it before, but you are right about the Pandora singer being a little flat, MC. As you said, though, he gets back on track quickly. I agree, No Fair at All is another really good underrated track.
