Let's look at a few "lost" tracks by Keith, best known for his 1967 hit, 98.6.
The first is his debut single, Ain't Gonna Lie, released in late 1966. It was released just two months before 98.6, and has a very similar melody and arrangement. It just barely made the top 40, and I've never heard it on any oldies station.
The next is Keith's final single, Daylight Savin' Time, from 1967. As with Ain't Gonna Lie, it definitely has a "98.6"-ish sound. Oddly, this never made the top 40, topping out at 79. Love the vintage photos in this video!

I've always been a fan of "98.6" and once had the "Aint Gonna Lie" CD. If it's still available, it's a great little slice of happiness. It's funny though, the first time I ever heard 98.6 was on a 60s compilation cassette that I had bought many years ago. Some of the songs were the original recordings and some were remakes. I unfortunately didn't know this until after I had opened the cassette. Oh well. Anyway, for the longest time, I was under the impression that the version on the tape was the original until I bought the CD. Needless to say, I liked both versions.

Oh yes, I remember those cassettes! I still have a couple of them. Even K-Tel, who usually included only original hit recordings on their compilations, managed to sneak a few re-recordings on some of those collections in the '80s. One I particularly remember is Pure Pop, which had a remake of Brandy. It took quite a while before the original version of that song stopped sounding odd to me, as I was so used to hearing the re-recorded one.

Hi Dawn,
I 'm a big fan of Music Mike's videos - great stuff!
The only track I've ever heard by Keith is 98.6 which I really love, so it was great to hear something else by him. Both are very good and it's too bad they didn't do better chart wise.

The only reason I can think of that they weren't more popular is that they were released too close together, as Keith had four singles within a nine month period. But then again, that seems to not be all that unusual for the '60s.

There should be an oldies station somewhere- 98.6 FM!
I heard "Ain't Gonna Lie" when it came out- haven't heard it since. Pretty good song, not quite 86.6 though. Never heard the other song til now- no big loss. Can't take too many similar songs in a row

They're all similar in sound, but there's something extra special about 98.6.

This conversation is interesting, and I know that 98.6 was a subject of conversation at least once or twice in earlier Click days. I think Adam focused on Keith in an opinion post (maybe Pete had him in a contender post also; I'm not sure.) Back in the day, Keith was just considered virtually a one hit wonder, and 98.6 was kinda average. Good song but nothing to spur the type of conversations we've had here. It's interesting how much staying power this song has, and how much thread has been devoted to it over the years.

You're right, Keith and 98.6 was in one of Adam's Opinion posts, and I think in the INSANE list as well. It does seem to be a favorite of many of us here. That's interesting that Keith was considered a one hit wonder even then. As I mentioned to Ken, I'm not sure why those other songs didn't catch on as well as 98.6, unless it was a case of too many songs in too short of a period.
