Another round of songs to consider and rate. Our scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A "meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! **************************************************** Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival 3.5 Cathy's Clown - Everly Brothers 4.25 (my parents had the Everlys' greatest hits LP when I was little, and this was my favorite. I used to play it over and over) An Innocent Man - Billy Joel 2.5 (I never quite warmed up to this) You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt 4.5 Kicks - Paul Revere & the Raiders 4.5 Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves 3.25 (a tad overplayed through the years, but still nice to hear on occasion) Strange Way - Firefall 5.0 (love it, especially the album version with the full flute solo. Would love to learn to play that!) Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful 3.25 Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder 4.2 Hot Child in the City - Nick Gilder 3.5 It's the Same Old Song - Four Tops 3.5 All I Need - Jack Wagner 1.0 (I've tried and tried to like this, but never succeeded) I'll Be Around - Spinners 4.75 (always loved this) He's A Rebel - Crystals 3.0 Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 4.5 (one of the most memorable sax riffs ever. An all-around great song)

Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival 3.2 There are about 3 or 4 CCR songs that sound alike - even without the fact that you tend to focus on Johns unique voice. The songs are just too similar. This is one of them. Cathy's Clown - Everly Brothers 3.9 Top 5 on my Everly Brothers list An Innocent Man - Billy Joel 2.0 Maybe at the bottom of my Billy list. The problem with the song is, IMO, it takes too long to resolve the rhyming patterns. When I hear the line "Because I am an Innocent Man" it sounds like he's singing the wrong words, because it doesn't rhyme with anything. So then you listen more carefully, and yeah, there it is, sure it rhymes, but with something he sang 30 seconds earlier or so. - Maybe it's just me. You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt 3.8 This is the only cover that Linda ever did that I really liked. I think it might have been because I didn't know it was a cover at the time. The ol' "Heard it First" rule again. Kicks - Paul Revere & the Raiders 4.1 My second favorite Paul Revere song. Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves 1.7 Aside from not really caring for this song anyway, it reminds me of a guy I used to work with who tried really hard to act happy even when he wasn't. Many times if someone asked him how it was going, he'd put this big grin on his face and say "Walking on Sunshine!" Strange Way - Firefall 4.4 Love this one! Top 500 for sure. Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful 3.8 Good song, and so catchy! Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder 3.7 As a music lesson in political correctness it blows "Black and White" away, and stomps "Everyday People" quite soundly as well. The lyrics aren't as trite, and it has a great arrangement. But I really don't like being preached at, and this costs it maybe 0.5. Hot Child in the City - Nick Gilder 3.6 Very good song. It's the Same Old Song - Four Tops 3.3 I love the Tops, but this one ranks lower than most. All I Need - Jack Wagner 2.0 Nah. I'll Be Around - Spinners 4.2 My second fave by them. Could sneak into the top 500. He's A Rebel - Crystals 1.5 The only song about bad boys that I like is the one by the Miami Sound Machine. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 3.8 Good song. The sax solo dwarfs the rest of the song, though.

Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival 3.0 (Even though I really like CCR, this one sounds like so many of the others.) Cathy's Clown - Everly Brothers 3.0 An Innocent Man - Billy Joel 2.0 You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt Kicks - Paul Revere & the Raiders 4.0 (Good song--- I hate to admit that I prefer the cover version from 1986 that the Monkees did, probably because it reminds me of a happy place in my life. Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves 3.5 (I always thought this song was happy, but it's also one that will get jammed in your head and refuse to leave for days at a time...) Strange Way - Firefall 3.5 Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful 4.0 (One of my faves from the Spoonful) Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder 4.5 (I know so many loathe this song, but not only do I think it's a good song, it's got sentimental ties to me. When I was 11 years old, I was watching TV and this video came on. I immediately took notice and began to salivate uncontrollably. I asked my sister, "Who IS that MAN"? "Oh, that's Stevie Wonder." "NO, the OTHER one." "Oh, that's Paul McCartney." And so began my lifelong adoration of all things Paul. Hot Child in the City - Nick Gilder 3.0 It's the Same Old Song - Four Tops 3.0 All I Need - Jack Wagner 1.5 (All I neeeeeeed is some more fingernails down a chalkboard. Actually, I gave it the high rating that I did only because it reminds me of the good ol' days when I used to be obsessed with "General Hospital".) I'll Be Around - Spinners 4.5 (I love the Spinners. Call me weird, but my favorite song from them is "Games People Play---(They Just Can't Stop It)") He's A Rebel - Crystals 3.0 Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 3.0

I guess Billy thought it was clever, but it comes off as clumsy and overly wordy. Yikes, I imagine that "Walking on Sunshine" guy did get tiresome after a while. Nothing wrong with being cheerful, but it sounds like he was overdoing it a bit.

LOL - good point about He's A Rebel!

I've always had a soft spot for the song; it's got a nice message without being too sentimental, and they both sing it well. I absolutely love Games People Play - it's my favorite Spinners song as well! In fact, if I were to pick one song that brings back the most vivid memories of childhood for me, that would definitely be in the running.

Now that you mention it, Ken, I think we also played Ebony and Ivory in band when I was in ninth grade. I still have my marching lyre filled with copies of the sheet music - I'll have to see if it's in there. I have City to City also, but it's been awhile since I've played it. There are some great songs on there, I agree.

Yikes, I imagine that "Walking on Sunshine" guy did get tiresome after a while. Nothing wrong with being cheerful, but it sounds like he was overdoing it a bit. Well, he left the company I was with inabout 1985 or 86. Would you believe that 20 years later I ran into him when I was doing a safety site visit to U Nevada Reno? He was a safety officer there. He hadn't changed!

I always in the repeat button on this one The Firefall song has a little more of a rock edge to it than most of their other hits. I couldn't find the original on YouTube, but here's a link to a live version of it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=35CYYAeYHE0&feature=related You're not missing much with the Jack Wagner song. It's one of those very bland, generic-sounding '80s ballads. He was an actor on General Hospital at the time, and I guess he was trying to branch out into music.
