Our scale: 5.0 - A song you absolutely love, one of your absolute favorites 4.0 - While not quite top-tier, a song you enjoy a lot 3.0 - Not a favorite, but you basically like it 2.0 - A "meh" song, you could take it or leave it 1.0 - Yikes! Turn that song off! **************************************************** Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren 4.75 (I remember getting the 45 back around '89 and playing it over and over. Love this one!) On Broadway - Drifters 3.25 Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics 4.5 ABC - Jackson 5 3.0 (I used to like this a bit more, but it lost some of its appeal from so much overplay on the radio) Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf 4.0 She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 1.0 (I didn't mind Good Thing, but never liked this song at all. To make matters worse, it was horribly overplayed back then) Blinded By the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 4.0 Cry Like A Baby - Box Tops 3.25 Tainted Love - Soft Cell 5.0 (Loved this from the first time I heard it. The original is pretty good too, although this is a case where the remake is better) Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan 3.5 Sloop John B - Beach Boys 4.25 (definitely a case of where the arrangement makes the song. I don't care for the original at all, but Brian's arrangement is outstanding) Heaven Is A Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle 2.0 Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas 3.5 Lazy Day - Spanky & Our Gang 4.25 (great '60s grooviness!) I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & the News 3.0

Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren 4.75 (I like this one too!)
On Broadway - Drifters 3.75 (Poignant, yet simple)
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics 4.0 (Not bad, though I like a couple of Eurythmics' hits slightly better.)
ABC - Jackson 5 3.25 (I like other Jackson 5 songs better)
Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf 4.5
She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 2.5 (I like the beat of the song, but I agree with Dawn...it was 1989's most overplayed)
Blinded By the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 3.75
Cry Like A Baby - Box Tops 3.0
Tainted Love - Soft Cell 5.0 (My favourite one-hit wonder!)
Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan 3.0
Sloop John B - Beach Boys 3.75
Heaven Is A Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle 2.0 (Very overplayed in 1987 AND 1988. I much prefer "I Get Weak" from the same album)
Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas 1.75 (For some reason, this song annoys me. LOL)
Lazy Day - Spanky & Our Gang 3.75
I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis and the News 2.0 (There are other Huey songs I like more)

Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren 3.9 Todd actually recorded this twice. The first time was with his group Nazz, and the second time solo. I like both, but I found the Nazz version a little under-done. It was kinda fleshed-out in the solo. On Broadway - Drifters 3.0 I really like a lot of the Drifters songs. This one, however, has been overdone. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics 3.5 Good one. ABC - Jackson 5 2.5 Didn't care that much for the majority of the Jacksons' playlist - even before Michael became a white woman. Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf 3.7 A classic! She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 3.2 Never minded this at all. Blinded By the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 3.6 You have got to be kidding me! Literally the second I started to type this, the song came on XM 70s on 7! I like the song, but back in the day it was a little overplayed -- but now, I haven't heard it in at least 5 seconds!! Cry Like A Baby - Box Tops 3.4 I really like the Box Tops. But I like The Letter and Sweet Cream Ladies more than this one. Tainted Love - Soft Cell 4.0 Didn't know ther was a remake. Don't even know which one I'm familiar with. But I like it! Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan 3.3 Decent Sloop John B - Beach Boys 3.7 I agree with Dawn. This is a case where heard it first doesn't hold. The Beach bOys kinda smoothed out all the rough edges of the Kingston Trio version. Heaven Is A Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle 2.3 Whatever Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas 3.5 Good song, but I prefer Dust In the Wind by far Lazy Day - Spanky & Our Gang 3.4 This is not my favorite by them but, I really like just about everything I know by them. Definitely a group I have to get deeper into. I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & the News 2.6 Never got into Huey

Wow, I can't believe I just found this series tonight.(Serves me right for not coming in more often...) Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren 4 Good song. Could've cut down on the "think of me"'s at the end, though. On Broadway - Drifters 3 OK. Makes me think of the old Radio Free Europe(?) commercial. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics 3.5 ABC - Jackson 5 2 Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf 3.5 She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 3 Blinded By the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 3.5 Try as I might, I always get the, umm, "alternate" lyric in my head when I hear ths. Cry Like A Baby - Box Tops 4 Tainted Love - Soft Cell 3.5 Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan 4 Confession: for the longest time, I thought the second line went, "It takes some time for a peanut to grow. Sloop John B - Beach Boys 4 Heaven Is A Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle 2.5 Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas 4.5 Lazy Day - Spanky & Our Gang 4 I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & the News 3 (P.S.: Dawn, would it be OK if I were to comment on some of the older ones, even though you've already tallied up the votes?)

It's surprising that they never had any follow-up singles, considering how successful Tainted Love was. You're right about Heaven is a Place on Earth being very overplayed back in the day. It seemed like it was always on the radio!

There's something very ethereal about it. Same here about Tainted Love - it wasn't until years later that I realized that Where Did Our Love Go was a part of the song. The radio stations where I lived faded the song out before it got to that part of it, as did the single edit.

The arrangement is absolutely brilliant.

The original Tainted Love was by Gloria Jones, from 1964. Why it wasn't a bigger hit at the time is a mystery. Here's a YouTube link to it:

Sure, that's fine, Smitty! I'd like to hear your thoughts on the songs in the older posts. I can relate about Blinded By the Light. That lyric befuddled me for years - and even now, it still sounds odd.

Dawn, these are great picks. Here's my input: Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren 4.0 This is nice love song. My friend Jody played me the original from the group Nazz, which Rundgren was a member. On Broadway - Drifters 4.0 My brother loved this song growing up. So much, he bought an Atlantic 45 reissue back in the late 80's! It's also a favorite of mine. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics 4.0 Annie Lennox is one of the most underrated voices in music! ABC - Jackson 5 3.0 Not the best J5 song. Yes, it is way the hell overplayed. But it is still a good Motown record. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf 4.5 "I like smoking lightning. Heavy metal thunder." Great lyric and a killer groove! She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 2.0 FYC were everywhere in 1989! This wound up being used in movies. It overstayed its welcome. I prefer "Don't Look Back" and "I'm Not The Man I Used To Be", which were singles from the same CD. Blinded By The Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 3.75 It was Bruce's first ten hit as a songwriter. So far his only number one single. Keep those royalty checks coming boys! Cry Like A Baby - Box Tops 3.5 I prefer this one over "The Letter". Tainted Love - Soft Cell 4.0 I enjoy the extended mix with a portion of the Supremes "Where Did Our Love Go?" Magnet & Steel - Walter Egan 4.0 Reminds of when I was a kid riding with my dad in his car! ;D Sloop John B. - Beach Boys 4.25 This is based on West Indian Folk song from the 1920's. Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle 3.5 I liked this in high school. Nice slice of 80's pop. Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas 4.0 The Midwest answer to Boston. One of my favorites! Lazy Day - Spanky & Our Gang Not familiar with this one. I Want A New Drug - Huey Lewis & the News 3.25

Here is a video with Lazy Day. Of their three biggest hits, this is probably my second favorite.
