Since I've recently been able to break out my 45's again, it got me to thinking about song edits, and how some songs are actually better in their full length LP versions. My list of "uneditables" would include:
"Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. The single edit cuts out a lot of the "meat" of the song, IMO.
"The Heart Of The Matter" by Don Henley. The edit cuts out an entire verse of the chorus, which makes I think the song seem disjointed.
"American Pie" by Don McLean. Enough said.
Any others?

While it generally doesn't bother me, some radio edits are like nails on a chalkboard......
Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad - Meatloaf -cuts a chunk out of the middle
Save A Prayer - Duran Duran -cuts out a verse
Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol -cuts a chunk out of the middle
And in some cases, the single release is entirely different from the album:
Cover Girl by NKOTB (single version better, IMO)
The Reflex by Duran Duran (album version better, IMO)

I think the worst may be You Keep Me Hangin' On by Vanilla Fudge. They cut out a huge chunk in the middle and when they "spliced" the two remains together, the lyrics don't even make sense.

"Crimson & Clover" by Tommy James & The Shondells. Our classic hits station plays the full length version, but most stations don't.

"Light My Fire"--Doors...but I actually like the single, as a little organ solo goes a LONG way... "My Ding-a-Ling"--Chuck Berry's opus to his thingy is actually 14 minutes long on the live album it came from I've noticed that stations are playing badly edited versions of "Beginnings" and "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" by Chicago "Night Moves"--Bob Seger "Long Time"--Boston "Blinded By The Light"--Manfred Mann's Earth Band One oddity I posted about a year ago was Mitch Ryder's "Devil With a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly", in which the single is LONGER than the album track!
Another good topic is how different the mono single is from the stereo album...but that is for another day.

When I worked in radio, the long version of Crimson & Clover was dayparted to only play outside of AM drive. So if you listened to the morning show, you got the edit while the LP version was played the rest of the time.
I'm with Railyn where I'm usually not bothered by single/radio edits as a lot of the time the album versions are just padded out with long instrumental bits that really don't add anything to the song (Steve Winwood's late 80's albums come to mind).

Now I know about 99.9% of the radio stations in the U.S. will not play the unedited version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, preferring instead the watered down 3 minute version. But I remember in 1993, when I was on a temporary duty assignment in Roswell, NM, the classic rock station there did play the full 17 minute version. If they did that as a normal course of events or the DJ just needed an extra long pit stop, like other issues that involve Roswell, have yet to be resolved.
Another song that gets beaten up on the radio is Sky Pilot by the Animals. Most stations cutting the weird middle bit.
And I would like to add something about Light My Fire. It's long been my opinion that the organ solo with intermittent guitar licks is the meat of the song, sandwiched in between Jim's vocals. Without the middle, the song just doesn't make sense.
