Ok, I'm in...thought I would do a thread on Tommy James & the Shondells, since their music seems to be pretty well regarded by many of us here. My favorite TJ & S song is one of their lesser-known ones. It was never a hit in its own right, but was relegated to the B side of their single "I Like the Way." The first time I heard it was in the spring of 1987, when I borrowed a friend's copy of the group's old Roulette best of collection. I was absolutely blown away by the song, and played it over and over. The title: "(Baby Baby) I Can't Take It No More." Couldn't find a YouTube video of it, but a clip can be heard on Amazon's site, track #5: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000032R3/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001DXKNJ6&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0Z0V1PFXK1YT818VY33Z . Such an incredible song...this should have been an A-side IMO. It reminds me a bit of some of Smokey Robinson's writing from this period.

Hard to pick just one, but here goes. A great choice, Joe. It's been a while since I've heard this one, but I've always liked it.

I always liked Tommy James & The Shondells. It's amazing just how many artists have covered his songs. Joan Jett did that fantastic version of Crimson and Clover in the eighties, while Tiffany did a HORRIBLE job with I Think We're Alone Now.
I have to say that Crimson and Clover is my all time favourite by them.

Love both tracks! The band had so many great songs.I'm going to pick "Crimson & Clover." Of all the hits Tommy and the guys had I would guess that it probably receives the most airplay on oldies stations. I remember a buddy and I browsing through a collection of 45's back in the mid 80's and we each bought quite a few and "Crimson and Clover" was one that I bought that evening.

This is a hard one for me, as I LOVE Tommy James & The Shondells. In the fall of '89, Rhino released an Anthology of them, and I got the cassette (because, for some reason, the CD was a single CD priced at $26.). Throughout that winter, I played that tape SO much I eventually had to break down and buy the CD, because I wore it out! I was especially fond of the songs on side 2. So, what song can I pick?
OK... "Crystal Blue Persuasion"

I have to say that Crimson and Clover is my all time favourite by them. I agree with your opinion of both of those remakes. Joan's cover was an interesting and different interpretation of the original, but Tiffany's was too gimmicky and has held up even less well over the years.

It's amazing how many hits the group had, and how consistently good their material was.

Yeah Tiffany's version of "I Think We're Alone Now" was dreadful, and how can we forget her cover of "I Saw HIM Standing There" ugh!

I'll do more once I get home and can access YouTube. For now, suffice it to say that my favorite Tommy James song is Sweet Cherry Wine.

Agreed...as bad as "I Think We're Alone Now" was, I think her Beatles cover was even worse. Yikes! Ken, your mention of that song gives me an idea for another new thread...

I'll say "Gettin Together". Youtube doesn't have the original version.
