Here's one to discuss...
How about any given performer who has sold millions, is amazingly talented, has written some fantastic songs, but as a person is either a total jerk or a complete egomaniac....this may be determined by personal experiences, perhaps you met someone and you were completely turned off, or a performer is constantly in the media.
The one I can come up with is Edward Van Halen. I have never met him in person, but have seen VH in concert many times and no doubt he was an amazing player. But.....how much drama can one guy cause in a band? The revolving door for various members in VH seems to always be operated by good ol' Edward. Several people I have spoken to who have attended meet and greets have had all the same impression...while everybody else is upbeat and happy, Mr. VH seems uninterested and arrogant.
Any other imput here?

Liam and Noel Gallagher from Oasis.
Oasis. Fantastic rock band that looked like the Beatles, but sounded AMAZING. Oasis was a huge part of my high school soundtrack, and "Wonderwall", "Champagne Supernova", and "Morning Glory" were huge hits my freshman year. By 1996, they were arguably one of the best rock groups to come out of Britain in the mid-1990's.
And, then came the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.
It was bad enough that Liam Gallagher messed up the words to Champagne Supernova on purpose, and worse still when he mocked the audience with silly hand gestures. The icing on the cake came when Liam took a swig of beer from a bottle and spewed it over the audience, deliberately trying to make an ass of himself. It was painful to watch.
Plus, the feud between Liam and Noel was so tense at times that I hear concerts were called off because of it.
Oasis had been a great band with lots of talent...too bad it only takes a couple of fights to tarnish that reputation.

I enjoy Todd Rundgren's music a lot, but I've read a number of accounts that describe him as a difficult person.
Diana Ross is another example. I've always liked her music, both as a solo artist and with the Supremes, but the things I have read about her and her behavior toward Mary Wilson at the Motown 25th Anniversary special pretty much paint her as a self-absorbed diva.

I have heard Bob Dylan being called hard to get along with, pushy, holier than thou and several similar descriptions. I do know that in 1964 he was booked for a concert at Tufts University and simply never showed up.

I don't know of any based on personal experience, but based on bios of the person and bios of the band, it seems John Lennon was a total jerk to try to be friends with. Argumentative, insensitive, even cruel.
Long ago in high school we read an essay describing someone who sounded like the very worst person in the whole world. You'd a-thought such a person couldn't even be allowed outside in society. And you didn't find out who it was til the end of the article- and it was Richard Wagner.

I'm a fan of Motley Crue, but I have ZERO respect for Vince Neil. The guy drove drunk and killed somebody, got off with 30 days community service, and has never expressed ANY remorse or regret over the incident. In concert, he only sings half the lyrics between gasps for air (yet I've never met a fan who only paid for half a ticket!!), and has basically become a fat, lazy slob. As far as I'm concerned, the Crue should have stuck with John Corabi instead of taking his loser ass back.
While we're on the subject, Axl Rose too! C'mon! 15 years to release an album? Then the thing finally comes out as a Best Buy exclusive, with zero promotion, after most of the songs had already leaked out on the internet.. I'll admit that "Chinese Democracy" is a better album than given credit for. But worth waiting 15 years for?
When Vince and Axl had their notorious "feud" back in the 80's, I used to wish they'd just beat the crap out of each other and shut the hell up!
From what I've heard (and am not surprised), Kurt Cobain was a major asshole as well. (But we all know how much I loathe Nirvana!)
I could also imagine that Sebastian Bach, Lars Ulrich, Phil Anselmo of Pantera, and Gene Simmons are jerks as well, but I'm mostly basing that on what I've seen and heard..
....and don't even get me started on Mike Love!!!

Now, I've never met him but I've heard that Don Henley can be a bit of a jerk.

I have never been able to figure out how Neil got off so easily. As I recall, the crash he caused involved several vehicles and quite a few people were injured along with Vince's passenger who got killed. I can only assume that he paid out alot of people with some serious cash! I can't stand Nirvana either and know from a personal friend who met Kurt Cobain that he was indeed a man with a hot pipe screwed sideways up his a$$!!! But he was a kind hearted soul compared to his wife! My response to her after she met them both was to perhaps try to find a person who actually is talented in the field of music who at least has that to offer to offset his assholedness!

I've heard many stories that Eddie Van Halen has been overly friendly in a lot of cases, almost like he needs friends. I think it's the booze that has caused all the drama in VH.

Seems that being a good person is not necessarily condusive to quality rock and roll...from the "old days", Chuck Berry was a handful--paranoid, incredibly distrusting, and focused solely on $$$. Rolling Stone ran an article recently about him that tries to make him into some tortured saint, but I ain't buying it. Plus, most of his legal problems are because of his sheer arrogance and attitude.
Legends abound that Jerry Lee Lewis killed a fan by throwing her from his upper-story hotel window, and that it was covered up by the music industry.
In regard to others posted, John Lennon, according to "The Lennon Diaries", was a spoiled, paranoid narcissist who abused women and was simply untrustworthy...
...and Diana Ross? My sister (a VERY successful fashion executive) met her in the "green room" before an appearance on the Oprah show, and told me that she is bat-guano crazy, and the battiest human being she has ever met. Total diva, to the point of totally dysfunctional.
