I hadn't realized how young he was when he was with The Box Tops! What a great voice! RIP, Alex.

That's too bad. I've seen the video of him doing "The Letter", and he sings like someome much older- hard to believe he was 16.
Just like Stevie Winwood singing "I'm a Man". Amazing.

Chilton and his band mates from Big Star were actually scheduled to perform at the SXSW conference that week. Everyone from R.E.M., Replacements, Cheap Trick and Stone Temple Pilots have cited their music as influential in their careers. Pretty impressive that Big Star were considered a small southern band on subsidiary label to Stax records. I know "The Letter", but not sure about the Box Tops other hits.

Hi Dave, Other Box Tops hits - "Soul Deep" (see the video clip above) , "Cry Like a Baby" and "Neon Rainbow" are all worth checking out when you get the chance.
