Did you guys notice that the 1980's seemed to overutilize the saxophone solo in a lot of songs?
It seemed like every artist decided that the song just wasn't worth releasing unless it had a saxophone solo in it!
I think the trend started becoming popular with Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" in the late 1970's, and then exploded throughout the 1980's and the first half of the 1990's.
Here's some examples of what I mean...
Harden My Heart/QUARTERFLASH
Seasons Change/EXPOSE
Foolish Beat/DEBBIE GIBSON
Any others you can think of?

Ken and Dawn:
What are the songs you posted? My computer isn't letting view them, and I have a song I'd like to submit, if you haven't already.
Thanks.

I think in the 60s and early 70s, people into the new progressive music (well certainly me and the people I knew) considered the sax a backwards instrument, reminiscent of my folks music and the 1950s. Then in the mid 70s, the sax appeared in neat stuff.
Pink Floyd "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (especially the end) Moody Blues "Driftwood" (especially the end) and Bobby Keys became a Rolling Stones sideman at this time.

Huh...guess the sax solo showed up earlier than I thought!

Two more off the top of my head: and Careless Whisper is another one that I immediately thought of just after making this post. Kind of hard to believe that song is 25 years old now. My sister owned the "Make It Big" album and played it constantly!

The sax solo in Urgent was performed by Junior Walker, who's '60s hits "Shotgun" and "What Does It Take" (among others) prominently featured his sax.
