This link was posted on another music site, and I was so blown away by it I wanted to share it here. I've heard the name Sister Rosetta Tharpe mentioned in passing before, but was not at all familiar with her or her music. But, judging from this performance, she should be in the Hall of Fame along with the other early great rock influences. Check out her guitar technique, especially on the solo - she absolutely smokes!
This performance is said to have been filmed in 1963.

Isn't that great? A little over a year ago, Bob Dylan mentioned her on his Sirius radio show. And lots of folks (including me) logged on youtube to find this. She's got another clip on youtube (Down by the Riverside) but I definitely like this better.
Sad she didn't have much recognition in the rock world of the time. But apparently people like Dylan, Johnny Cash and Elvis knew of her and liked her playing back then.

That was great!
I knew I had heard her name somewhere before, and it was from the interviews with Bob Dylan, from the excellent documentary " No Direction Home."

Dawn,
I love that video! I heard about Sister Rosetta in documentary about the blues on PBS some years ago. She came from the field of gospel music and fused it with a rock and roll beat. Maybe if her stuff is out on CD, people will have access to it. I'm sure YouTube helps a lot.
