After our trivia game BOMBED and suffered a horrible, fiery death, I said I would do trivia questions at random.
Well I never did. Until today.
The number one selling American group of 1967 was the Monkees.
Who was number two?
Please try to make educated guesses without referring to the net or Whitburn or other books. Thanks!

I take a scientific stab in the dark and say Diana Ross & the Supremes.

Good guesses all around!
Correct answer?
The Buckinghams! Can you believe that?
I'll try to dig up another question for the next couple days.

The Buckinghams, huh? Never would have picked them. (In fact I was kicking myself for not picking the Beach Boys) - But I do remember that the Buckinghams had a HUGE '67. - Without looking at my Whitburn - I think there were 4 top 40 hits (kinda unususal, at least back then): Kind of a Drag, Don't You Care. Mercy Mercy Mercy, and Hey Baby They're Playing Our Song. Also, "Susan" may have come out in '67, even though I think it's mainly a '68 song. I'm not sure if the Buckinghams EVER had any other hits after that run.
Good question, Adam.
Let's do more!! ;D
Modification: OK -- I hadda look at my Whitburn. Actually they were all TOP 20 Songs (even more unusual), and Susan hit the Hot 100 in 12/67, climbing to #11 in '68. They also relased Lawdy Miss Clawdy in '67 (peaked at #41). They had one minor hit not associated with 1967, "Back In Love Again" which came out in '68 and peaked at #57 that year. (Glad I looked, I had forgotten all about Back In Love Again and I do remember the song. It will now go on my next No One Else Remembers cd.

Actually, never heard it on the radio-I have the Greatest Hits and saw in the Whitburn guide that it was a Hot 100 hit so I listened. And I've seen them probably 2 dozen times over the past several years-and they've never sung it.

We've got a streak going here. ;D I saw them in (I think) late '68 or early '69. I couldn't even tell you if they sang it THEN. I do remember it from the radio a few times back then, though.

There is a GREAT song on their Mercy, Mercy, Mercy collection called You. It was originally unreleased. It sounds nothing like their other British Invasion influenced stuff. It's more like a harmony thing, closer to the Byrds, I guess.

Great question. Never would have guessed the Buckinghams with all the other great American artists out there. I actually thought of the Doors, Beach Boys, & the Box Tops before going with the Supremes as my guess. But hey, the Buckinghams had a great year. Can't wait for the next question. Love trivia.
