Well CSN has it's first REAL single disc collection from Rhino. Of course, it's not complete, but how do you anthologize a group like CSN who had such classic albums? Still, I question some choices in favor of others.
In both the cases of "Crosby, Stills & Nash" and "Deja Vu", I prefer the deep cuts over the singles and regular FM hits. In the case of the first album, I prefer 2 of the 3 tracks not represented here, You Don't Have to Cry and Pre-Road Downs, better than songs like Guinnevere and 49 Bye Byes. I think Cry shoulda been on there because it was the first song the three of them ever did!
Then there is Deja Vu. On this one, I think Country Girl, Everybody I Love You and the title cut are actually better than ALL the singles and FM cuts. But that's not so much the problem here. I understand them not including Helpless as that was a Neil track. (Although you could make an argument here-if So Far was credited to all 4 guys and Neil is not on those 1st album cuts, why can't these guys take credit for tracks like Helpless that they DID play on?) But what I DON'T understand is-where is Woodstock?? I'm thinking that Carry On/Questions is an alternate take too as that is how it was credited on the box set and not the original album. Carry On was actually a complete re-write of a Buffalo Springfield track called Questions.
So moving on, I thought I could get this for the "CSN" and "Daylight Again" tracks, which I don't have on CD. The 2 Daylight biggies (Wasted and Cross) are here. But Dark Star is NOT on from "CSN". True, it wasn't a single (a B side actually), but they were more popular on the FM dial and that song still gets play today. Just a Song is on here of course.
All Music Guide broke it down so I didn't have to figure it out: 7 cuts from "Crosby, Stills & Nash", 3 from "Deja Vu", 5 from "CSN" and 4 from "Daylight Again". (Nothing from comebacks like American Dream.)
1 Suite: Judy Blue Eyes Stills 7:25
2 Long Time Gone Crosby 4:18
3 Just a Song Before I Go Nash 2:14
4 Southern Cross Curtis, Curtis, Stills 4:41

6 Helplessly Hoping Stills 2:39
7 Shadow Captain Crosby, Doerge 4:33
8 Our House Nash 3:00
