Well -- it happened to George Harrison who used the tune to 'He's So Fine' wnen he wrote 'My Sweet Lord.' And Robbie Dupree "borrowed" the Doobies 'What a Fool Believes' for his prophetically titled 'Steal Away.' And now Avril LaVigne is being sued by the interests of a '70s group called Rubinoos. The chorus to Avril's song Girlfriend, it is claimed, sounds like a rather obscure Rubinoos song called 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" Well, I've listened to both of them. IT'S THE SAME SONG !!! Judge for yourselves. This short clip features both songs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvKNL3g0m0A&mode=related&search=

It does sound almost identical, close enough that it's very unlikely there wasn't some "lifting" involved. I'd be very surprised if she doesn't lose that lawsuit.

OK, I can hear a definite resemblance between the 2 songs...The funny thing is, though, that when I first heard "Girlfriend" it reminded me of the music on Jonathan's "Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg" game! It doesn't sound exactly like that, but it has the same kind of feel to it--sort of...I don't know, but for some reason it reminds me of that. "La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la, la..." There's also a version of the song on the game that has words, but I can't understand 'em all! There's one part where it sounds like something is being spelled out, but I can't understand what letters they are chanting! I will have to look up the info online. And BTW, if you need a free tutorial on how to play Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg--at least on Gamecube--just call Jonathan at... *lol* In addition to being good at playing video games, he is also quite willing to discuss 'em with anyone who will listen!

Well -- it happened to George Harrison who used the tune to 'He's So Fine' wnen he wrote 'My Sweet Lord.' I read somewhere (and I'm sure Railyn knows this story better than I do) that Weird Al, early on in his career, was threatened with a lawsuit by--of all people, George Harrison. (I think Al did a parody of "Taxman" that was "Pac-Man" or something like that--that would be worth hearing IMHO!) After that, I think Al started making sure he had people's permission before parodying their songs.

I just want to mention how much I like I Want To Be Your Boyfriend, it's a great piece of power pop The day I heard about this I was driving my niece to work and she wanted to listen to our local top 40 station while we were on our way. The two DJ's were talking about it and what I noticed right away, was that they were making fun of The Rubinoos (they had NO idea who the band was) and saying how there was no way that Avril would do such a thing , and that it was impossible for her to know this 'old and obscure" tune. There are definite similarities between the two songs. We'll just have to wait and see who wins.

I still say "Sk8ter Boi" is among the STUPIDEST songs ever written! As for her being sued........... "HA-HA!!"
