For the next 3 weeks, I PROMISE to keep this rolling, posting 25 song-portions every 2 or 3 days.
Let's move on!
950. TOP OF THE WORLD-Carpenters(73) (#1-2 wks, B'board, #3-DJD)
My absolute fave of theirs. Originally released on their '72 album "A song for you", it was a single at last in the fall '73 in conjuction with their "Greatest Hits" album. Wonderful tune, wonderful memories with all my family! RIP Karen-a voice for all heaven.
949. PAC-MAN FEVER-Buckner & Garcia(82) (#9, B'board, #3-DJD)
Could be one of my theme songs--a hip dance beat meets the entertainment fad of the day--Video games! One-hit wonder Atlanta duo; excited to see it on Rhino's 80's box set! Unlike many novelties, never gotten sick of the song--or the game!
948. YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE-Stevie Wonder(73) (#1-1 wk, B'board, #2-DJD)
One of the man's most beautiful tunes. Also one of his first I was familiar with. Very typical 70's AM pop/rock fare with great avlue. Trivia: The singers on the first verse are Jim Gilstrap and Gloria Barley.
947. EAT IT-"Weird Al" Yankovic(84) (#12, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
The "king of parody" has fun with the "king of pop". Another of the 80's best novelties, this was SOOOOO 8th grade for me. Great guitar by Rick Derringer!
946. BUMP 'N GRIND-R. Kelly(94) (#1-4 wks-B'board, #16-DJD)
Definitely one of the 90's best urban slow jams. Still love it after 9 years, much better than his newer stuff like "Ignition". #1 on Billboard's R & B chart for 12 weeks.
945. DESIRE-Andy Gibb(80) (#4- B'board, #3-DJD)
Ah, those memories of the jukebox at my local Pudgie's pizza. Played this at least 5 times in the spring of '80. The last of Andy's 7 top 10 hits in a row. "And you are the only one that I place my existence on"...
944. SOUL AND INSPIRATION-Righteous Brothers(66) (#1-3 wks- B'board, #3-DJD)
The first of their 2 #1's in my top 1000. Although not one of my absolute fave music acts, I still respect their good Spector production with good soulful singing. I personally like this better than "Lovin' feelin'".
943. YOU SHOULD HEAR HOW SHE TALKS ABOUT YOU-Melissa Manchester(82) (#5-B'board, #2-DJD)
Easily my fave from her. It worked when she broke away from her fluffy ballad mode into a new-wavish mode. "Hey Ricky"'s also her best album! Killer sax! Talk, talk, talk!
942. RUBY TUESDAY-Rolling Stones(67) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #3-DJD)
Nice one-the #1 song on my middle brother's birthdate (who hates the Stones, BTW). Cool flute, fine lyrics; flip side "Let's spend the night together"'s just as great, too!
941. RUNNING BEAR-Johnny Preston(60) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
The singer may not be well-known today, but the indian chanting was done by none other than the Big Bopper. From recording till the time it hit the top, it was a full year. Great song, yet sad story of Native American romance.
940. THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL-Michael Jackson(88) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
One of a record five #1's from his '87 release "Bad". Great groove, always has been my fave from the album.
Go on girl!
939. THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT-Robert John(72) (#3-B'board, #2-DJD)
The best of both worlds! First of Robert's 2 songs in the top 1000, and the first of the the 2 versions of "Lion" in my top 1000! Unforgettable falsetto to say the least.
938. CHAPEL OF LOVE-Dixie Cups(64) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
A wedding classic, and one of '64's most enduring American songs. Written by Phil Spector & Ellie Greenwich for Darlene Love, this slice of New Orleans soul remains the definitive version. I can see that "red bird" spinning on the turntable!
937. TOO LATE FOR GOODBYES-Julian Lennon(85) (#5-B'board, #2-DJD)
Had to be one of 1985's most played tunes. Actually still great to listen to; nice change of pace from first single "Valotte". Great harmonica!
936. SILENT LUCIDITY-Queensryche(91) (#9-B'board, #12-DJD)
Haven't heard it much recently, but when I made out the list in '95, I viewed it as a mellow Pink Floydish tune that's sure to become a classic. Nice acoustic guitar, very experimental, a far cry from their heavier stuff. The standout track from "Empire".
935. WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES-Doobie Brothers(79) (#1-1wk-B'board, #2-DJD)
The first of 4 for the Doobies in the top 1000, but the only one from the McDonald era. A sort of disco-ish groove that found a home on many formats on the radio--pop, easy listening, rock. Co-written by Mike with Kenny Loggins, it was a Grammy-winning smash.
934. I HEAR YOU KNOCKING-Gale Storm(55) (#2-B'board, #2-DJD)
This one's for you, H2!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D j/k
Better known as an actress ("My little Margie"), somehow this chick managed to notch up nearly ten chart hits! Remembering that this was 1955, pop radio stations were quite resistant to play R & B or rock, it was customary for pop artists to cover those tunes and get their own pop play. And yes, mt mom LOVES this!
933. OVER AND OVER-Dave Clark Five(65) (#1-1wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)
The lone US chart topper for these UK lads, it was a remake of a Bobby Day song, the flip of his biggie "Rockin' Robin". I LOVE both versions, yet the remake seemed to have a few changes in words, plus the omission of the last verse from Day's original. Killer drums!
932. FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE-Stevie Wonder(68) (#2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
Another of his many in the big thousand. One of his finest, again in a relaxed yet rhythmic mood. One of Motown's best from the later 60's; this was done a year before by such artists like Tony Bennett. Go get 'em, "Eivets"!
931. IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE-Roxette(90) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #19-DJD)
Not my fave tune from the "Pretty woman" movie, but the most popular and the Swedish duo's all-time biggest American hit (of 4 #1's). Pretty tune I still don't mind today. Stay strong, Marie...
930. THE WANDERER-Donna Summer(80) (#3-B'board, #3-DJD)
Are you ready for this? Her first of NINE in my top thousand! Loved her music lots back then, still love it now. This fave of my mom's very energetic! Great guitar! Not the Dion tune, BTW.
929. WHO'S THAT GIRL-Madonna(87) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD)
Title tune from one of her many films. Not a very memorable #1, and I hardly ever play it today. Actually has a good pop/Latin rhythm, though.
928. HEART ATTACK-Olivia Newton-John(82) (#3-B'board, #4-DJD)
Her 2nd of five in the top 1000. Her 3rd top 5 in less than a year (following Physical and Make a move on me). Holds the 80's record of biggest upward leap within the top 40 (moved from 39 to 13 the week ending October 2, 1982). Originally appeared on her 2nd Greatest Hits LP.
927. HUMPIN' AROUND-Bobby Brown(92) (#3-B'board, #2-DJD)
The first of 3 for the New Edition chick magnet (at least in '83 to '93, LOL) in the top 1000. All 3 originally appeared on different albums; this one from '92's "Bobby". Dance! Bounce!
926. IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME-Cher(89) (#3-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)
This or "Believe" is probably her best known from her post '87 era. Dig the video on the naval ship! Written and produced by the red-hot-in-the-fall '89 Diane Warren, great production! That said, indeed it's one of my all-time faves from her!
More to come!
Let's move on!
