Has it been LONG ENOUGH? PLEASE read both posts!
A new treat in store for you! In addition to year and peak positions, now also my 1987 rankings and pictures representing each song! How cool is THAT??!! Let's ROLL IT!
800. LET IT BE-Beatles(70)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-#689)
An absolute classic in all respects. Great organ from Billy Preston (I believe), would prefer hearing the version with George on lead guitar. And I should check out "Let it be naked" as well.
799. WISHING WELL-Terence Trent D'Arby(88)(#1-1 wk, B'board, #7-DJD)('87 rank-none)
Never minding the man's dredlocked image (he was also a boxer), this is a catchy song still after first loving this in my senior year of HS! Not likely to be in my 2005 CRAZY top 1000, however.
798. SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY-Donna Summer(83)(#3, B'board, #3-DJD)('87 rank-#688)
Still popular after all these years; it's her 2nd of her 9 songs in my CRAZY top 1000. You have to relate to the "woman" working hard for little. Great aerobic workout! I'm sure even the older Clicksters have heard this one too.
797. NORMAN-Sue Thompson(62)(#3, B'board, #3-DJD)('87 rank-#920)
Man, do I just love this more and more with time. Great upbeat tune with brass. Although lumped with the "young girl" singers of the time like Linda Scott and Marcie Blane, she was actually 34 years old when this hit! Love many of her others, especially "James" and "Paper Tiger".
796. SNOOPY VS. THE RED BARON-Royal Guardsmen(66)(#2, B'board, #2-DJD)('87 rank-#687)
A huge fave of mine since first knowing this on my sisters K-tel album "Goofy Greats". As long as I don't hear this more than once a week, it's still wonderful. If you know just their "Snoopy" music, check out a CD anthology (I own one). If you like any type of 60's American pop/rock infused with bubblegum, you shouldn't be disappointed.
795. AGAINST ALL ODDS-Phil Collins(84)(#1-3 wks, B'board, #10-DJD)('87 rank-#686)
I've just never warmed up to this song a whole lot. It was huge on Billboard, hence the top 1000 ranking. Look for a big drop in my 2005 list, with that list leaning more toward my personal faves. Liked the Genesis "Shapes" album from that same era MUCH more. First of just 2 solo hits in the top 1000.
794. SHEILA-Tommy Roe(62)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)('87 rank-#810)
As with many oldies, this proportionately moved up the ladder. Super Hollyesque style record, awesome percussion. Reportedly still a worker in a GE plant when this hit. But then--instant riches. One more from him higher!
793. DREAM LOVER-Bobby Darin(59)(#2, B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)('87 rank-#685)
First of his 2 in the top 1000, and his 3rd tune I knew of his. Wished oldies stations would play stuff like this more often again instead of dismissing it as somewhat corny and "if it's before the dance craze with Chubby and Little Eva, we won't play it" type. In other words, oldies stations that play 80% 60's and 20% 70's music.
Just a great overall tune.
792. I LIKE DREAMIN'-Kenny Nolan(77)(#3, B'board, #2-DJD)('87 rank-#684)
Nope, couldn't find any other album cover or picture! Of course that's the compilation the tune it appears on, Rhino's Super Hits of the 70's Volume 19. Remember loving this LOTS as a child, yet the artist stuck with me for years as "Peter Lemengello" I KID YOU NOT! Anyway, a great songwriter best known for the back-to-back #1's in 1975 "My eyes adored you" (VERY similar to "Dreamin'") and "Lady Marmalade" with Four Seasons arranger Bob Crewe. Passable voice, and a VERY dated tune, yet I still like it.
791. ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER-Fixx(83)(#4, B'board, #2-DJD)('87 rank-#587)
Compared to other 80's tunes, I still rave over this! Doesn't explain why I dropped this much however... Just a fantastic slice of 80's new wave rock.
790. I SECOND THAT EMOTION-Smokey Robinson & the Miracles(67)(#4, B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)('87 rank-#683)
One of those few Big Chill songs that didn't seemed to get too burned out. Still love this today. 2nd of 4 from the legendary Motown group in the top 1000 as a group, and Smokey has one solo as well.
789. I LOVE YOUR SMILE-Shanice(92)(#2, B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-none)
All right, most of you are scratching your head. But I was STILL in a top 40 phase back in '92, and this was played MUCH on top 40 radio. Rather cool midtempo grove with great chiming. Many know Bette Midler was on Johnny's last Tonight show, but few know this young lady was Jay Leno's first musical guest. With good reason--Branford played sax on the tune, and Kevin was Jay's first bandleader before Kevin Eubanks got in there. PSYCH!
788. DANCING ON THE CEILING-Lionel Richie(86)(#2, B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-#682)
Why I dropped the Fixx lower than this is just beyond me totally. Don't ask. A great party tune indeed, but not as entertaining today as "All night long".
787. LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS-Elton John(75)(#1-2 wks, B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-#680)
I believe I knew this version even before the Beatles' original. Love both versions to this even today, and great guitar by John Lennon, who else? Upset this failed to make the recent 2-CD compilation.
10,000 character limit. Man, that sucks.
