After an unplanned, aborted attempt a week ago, we'll give this another try!
750. LOVE GROWS WHERE MY ROSEMARY GOES-Edison Lighthouse (70) (#5-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-653)
Always a monstrous fave of mine since the early 70's. Just the way a perfect pop song should be.
749. LAST TRAIN TO TRANCENTRAL-KLF (92) (uncharted-B'board, #1-12 wks-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Always loved this techno-rap act; when I got the White Room cassette back in '91, I immediately loved this tune, and it became my fave song in all of '92.
748. WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU-Spinners (80) (#2-B'board, #4-DJD) (87 rank-652)
Great disco remake of the 4 Seasons' top 10 hit.
747. INDIAN RESERVATION-Raiders (71) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-651)
No Paul Revere on the credit, and Mark Lindsay had left the band. Lead vocal by Freddy Weller (not Hart), and a powerful message of the Native Cherokees' rights.
746. WOULD I LIE TO YOU-Eurythmics (85) (#5-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-512)
Their best ever! Crank it up! A far cry from "Sweet dreams".
745. MY LOVE-Paul McCartney & Wings (73) (#1-4 wks-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-648)
Great, powerful love tune. Known it since very little.
744. YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE-Supremes (66) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-751)
One of their best ones! The remakes don't compare.
743. ME AND MRS. JONES-Billy Paul (72) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-646)
Boy, how great it was in the fall '72 with Philly's Gamble/Huff productions. Great lounge ballad.
742. ON THE DARK SIDE-John Cafferty (84) (#7-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-645)
Always loved it. The HBO reruns of Eddie & the Cruisers really regenerated its popularity.
741. BUST A MOVE-Young M.C. (89) (#7-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-none)
One of the best raps ever. Loose, clean rap about standing up for yourself. Deserved 2nd winner of the Best Rap performance Grammy.
740. MY EYES ADORED YOU-Frankie Valli (75) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #5-DJD) (87 rank-644)
A little dated today, but still one of the era's nicest ballads.
739. THE SWEETEST TABOO-Sade (86) (#5-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-516)
Liked Smooth Operator, but really LOVED this because of its great, reggaeish rhythm. Don't hear it a lot today, but still sounds great.
738. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE-Beatles (67) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-643)
One of their many in the big thousand. Premiered on a worldwide satellite, and a big impact was left in our hearts and memories of this love and peace anthem. She loves you, yeah yeah!
737. THE WAY IT IS-Bruce Hornsby & the Range (86) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #14-DJD) (87 rank-642)
First of 3 in a row lite radio staples of the 80's here!
Some classic rock flair as well. Bruce has to be one of the better newer era pianists!
736. (I'VE HAD) THE TIME OF MY LIFE-Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes (87) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #5-DJD) (87 rank-712)
Gosh, I think every teenage girl of the time saw the movie and had the soundtrack! Good music, and this was definitely the best "new" tune from it.
735. BABY COME TO ME-Patti Austin & James Ingram (83) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #4-DJD) (87 rank-641)
Still love this Quincy Jones produced slow-mover. General Hospital made it a biggie.
734. HERE COMES THE HOTSTEPPER-Ini Kamoze (94) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Great one, especially compared to newer stuff out today. It's that "Na, na-na-na-na" tune inspired from "Land of 1000 dances". Jamaican dance/pop, but more rap than reggae.
733. DO YOU LOVE ME-Contours (62/88) (#3-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-640)
They don't get much better than this! Even years before Dirty Dancing, I LOVED hearing this on Saturday night Oldies shows. Work, work!
732. SATURDAY NIGHT-Bay City Rollers (75/76) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-639)
A huge childhood fave, as with much of the rest of my family. Great party tune even today!
731. JESSIE'S GIRL-Rick Springfield (81) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #6-DJD) (87 rank-637)
Man, did this take forever to reach #1! First remember hearing this in March '81, but didn't hit the zenith until August. Did those girls go crazy from his "Hospital" appearance, transcending his success to the pop chart! Assured his place as one of the 80's top male singers.
730. SOLDIER BOY-Shirelles (62) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-717)
Another great one! Not as spectacular as "Love me tomorrow", but a real winner!
729. LIGHTNIN' STRIKES-Lou Christie (66) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-636)
The great singer's biggest! Man, I love singing it. Hope to get his compilation CD soon...
728. CHERRY PINK APPLE BLOSSOM WHITE-Perez Prado (55) (#1-10 wks-B'board, #1-4 wks-DJD) (87 rank-634)
Just before Bill Haley was this chart juggernaut, a wonderful mambo selection. Should remain high up in my top 1000 next list as well.
727. BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY/FREE BIRD-Will to Power (88) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #16-DJD) (87 rank-none)
All right, they may not measure up to the Skynyrd and Framton classics, but this was still a biggie on top 40 and lite radio. A Miami dance act slowing down the tempo.
726. DOMINIQUE-Singing Nun (63) (#1-4 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-631)
All right, don't write! Growing up, I always remember this as a sprightly, simple tune, French lyrics notwithstanding. My mom still loves it, but it's not a fave of mine much anymore; definitely out of my top 2000 next time.
Your comments please.
