Tried it last night, but my computer "froze up" (couldn't even copy the 6 songs I typed up synopses for!).
Well if at first I don't succeed...
675. CUPID/I'VE LOVED YOU FOR A LONG TIME-Spinners (80) (#4-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-593)
Always loved this even more than "Workin' my way...". Excellent remake of a tune that's always been done well--a Sam Cooke original, of course.
674. MY GUY-Mary Wells (64) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-696)
One of the all-time great Motown tunes. She had three top ten's before this, but this was her grandest victory. And soon after she left Motown and had minimal success.
673. RHINESTONE COWBOY-Glen Campbell (75) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-592)
So many AM radio memories! I didn't go wild for it in the 80's, but now I like it more than ever before. Super plend of a pop melody and country-styled lyrics.
672. TURN! TURN! TURN!-Byrds (65) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-591)
Wonderful, somewhat revolutionary type of tune. Biblical lyrics, but sent powerful vibes for a young generation. Love it always, their best and biggest.
671. BURNING HEART-Survivor (86) (#2-B'board, #8-DJD) (87 rank-590)
Man, so many of these mid-80's tunes seem like they're ranked overly high! Anyway, a worthy sequel to "Eye of the Tiger", both from the Rocky movies.
670. I'LL REMEMBER-Madonna (94) (#2-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-none)
This has not held up well for me in recent years. Still overplayed on lite stations and indoor public places.
669. D'YER MAK'ER-Led Zeppelin (73) (#20-B'board, #4-DJD) (87 rank-588)
Always one of my faves of theirs! More top-40 sounding than most of their repertoire, and its got such a great sound! Titled as such for its somewhat reggae feel, a corruption of "Jamaica".
668. CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUAION-Tommy James & the Shondells (69) (#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-585)
A case where a Billboard #2 hit was MUCH better than the #1 song ahead of it (2525 in this case). Great groovy tune that had much the same message as Turn turn turn. A far cry from their bubblegum tunes--my 2nd fave of theirs.
667. LOVERBOY-Billy Ocean (85) (#2-B'board, #4-DJD) (87 rank-559)
Boy, this is a FIERCE dance groove! Loved this much back in its day; still all right today.
666. IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW-Chicago (76) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-584)
One of their nicest. Peter certainly made this tune his own, sounding more like their later stuff and getting away from the earlier brassy stuff.
665. ON OUR OWN-Bobby Brown (89) (#2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-none)
They are the Ghostbusters and they're in control...from the sequel movie, which I really liked. Fine tune that made the summer '89 exciting, but I haven't played it much recently.
664. BLACK DOG-Led Zeppelin (71/72) (#15-B'board, #3-DJD) (87 rank-583)
Wow, their 2nd in short order! Such a groovy tune with attitude! Definitely blues inspired the way I hear it. Oh yeah, need I say "Hey hey mama..." ;D
663. CHANTILLY LACE-Big Bopper (58) (#6-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-581)
Heeellloooo Baaaa-by! One of my mom's ll-time faves, I must say I like hearing this more WITHOUT her (call me weird...). Very classic typical oldie; one of the 3 guys lost way too soon in that plane crash.
662. SOUL MAN-Sam & Dave (67) (#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-677)
Some may be burnt out on this, but this has stood the test of time as one of the very best. So many cover versions, but you can't top the original. Since this list was made up, I've grown to like to like their music considerably more; this was the highest of their "just" 4 tunes on the list back in '95. RIP Dave Prater.
661. WANT ADS-Honey Cone (71) (#1 wk-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-580)
More great soul! Another fine memory from my sister's records. Typical "female afro soul" from the period, very "femme" tune.
660. TWO OF HEARTS-Stacey Q (86) (#3-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-483)
Ah, yes. ;D That great era of fun, innocent pop/dance tunes. What pure disco lover can't resist such a wonderful tune? Darn, I wished she had LOTS of big hits!
659. OPEN ARMS-Journey (82) (#2-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-579)
You'd thought this had ranked higher. Man, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO burnt out on this beyond belief! I don't dislike it, it was just TOO popular. Radio and Records even named it the 80's 2nd most airplayed record after that "Breath" song. All right, who has this TRULY in their all-time favorites...
658. KOKOMO-Beach Boys (88) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #7-DJD) (87 rank-none)
Ah...paradise. Aruba, Jamaica...Even Syracuse's Oldies station plays it! I guess enough people liked the Cocktail movie with this song tied to it. But I NEVER woulda guessed at the start of '88 that this group could stand a chance to hit the top again....but the song IS quite good! Their 2nd of at least 5 in my top thou!
657. LIVING INSIDE MYSELF-Gino Vannelli (81) (#6-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD) (87 rank-577)
You thought he was done with...NOPE! My did I LOVE this tune for whatever reason back then. And I still love it today. Consideraby more heartfelt than other biggie "I just wanna stop".
656. ROCKIN' CHAIR-Gwen McCrae (75) (#9-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-576)
All right, most of you are scratching your heads. But again, this was a HUGE fave of mine ever sice the mid 70's, taken from my sister's "Discomania" LP from K-tel. And now I have it on a few Rhino compilations, and this midtempo disco tune's always a WONDERFUL listen. And, yes, George's wife.
655. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME-Drifters (60) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-855)
A most essential, influential oldie, very fresh for 1960. This wonderful tune might as well stay forever in my top 1000, moved up 200 places between 1987 and 1994.
654. SUMMER BREEZE-Seals & Crofts (72) (#6-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-575)
Another one that's likely to be locked up in my top 1000 forever. It just simply doesn't get much better; a MONSTROUS fave of mine practically ever since current--it's those harmonies and "toy" piano!
653. RHTYHM IS A DANCER-Snap (92/93) (#5-B'board, #11-DJD) (87 rank-none)
All right, I know most of you were out of their top 40 phases by the 90's, but this song was HUGE and WAY overplayed back then. Another tune that was part of the Euro dance era, often where a woman sung and a man rapped. Lord, I think I already have this on 5 compilations...
652. SEE YOU LATER ALLIGATOR-Bill Haley & his Comets (56) (#6-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) (87 rank-574)
Another one I've known ever since toddler days--even hearing a few knockoff versions and re-recorded versions. And this hasn't worn thin on me whatsoever.
A most sensational record.
651. BE MY BABY-Ronettes (63) (#2-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) (87 rank-724)
This may be THE definitive Phil Spector produced recording. This was played all the time on those oldies shows throughout the 80's! What a great way to end this portion for today!
More of this wonderful list very soon!
Well if at first I don't succeed...
675. CUPID/I'VE LOVED YOU FOR A LONG TIME-Spinners (80) (#4-B'board, #2-DJD) (87 rank-593)
