Sat and I agreed to make this a regular feature! I'll list seven obscure songs a week that I like. If you know them, share your thoughts. If you don't know them, see if you can find them.
1. "Kayleigh" Marillion ('85 album "Misplaced Childhood") - British progressive rock group. Video got a lot of MTV airplay.
2. "Charlotte Anne" Julian Cope ('88 album "My Nation Underground") - British alternative new wave. Cope looks like a Bowie wannabe to me.
3. "Never Give Up" Blvd ('88 album self-titled) - Canadian pop group. Good saxophone on this. "Never give up, never give up... on a good thing"
4. "Here's Where The Story Ends" The Sundays ('91 album same title as song) - British acoustic indie group. Lead singer Harriet Wheeler kind of sounds like Suzanne Vega.
5. "Bad Reputation" Freedy Johnston ('94 album "This Perfect World") - Folk-rock, described as "yearning" and "weary." He's wandering around New York City singing "Do you want me now, do you want me now?"
6. "Wide Boy" Nik Kershaw ('84 album "The Riddle") - Synth-pop, was a hit in the U.K. He performed this at Live Aid in Wembley Stadium.
7. "Welcome To The Boomtown" David & David ('86 album "Boomtown") - David Baerwald & David Ricketts. Melancholy rock. Hit video on MTV. Made it to #37 on the Top 40. Ricketts plays great guitar on this. Baerwald went solo in '90, later worked with Sheryl Crow on her debut "Tuesday Night Music Club."

Hey Triple J, glad you are continuing it! Looks like it will be a great feature!
And wow, I actually know 2 songs! When I looked at this yesterday, I thought I only knew one, but then just now I noticed #4.
Here's Where the Story Ends-Very cool song. Remember hearing it when it first came out from a guy who was into alternative (real alternative, not U2 and REM). She also sounds a tad like Natalie Merchant. This has a VERY respectable ranking on the INSANE list. Watch for it guys!
Welcome to the Boomtown-This actually got LOTS of play on the rock station here. I think these days it just gets play on Lost weekends or 80s weekends. Decent tune, also on the INSANE list.
I know Julian Cope, but only World Shut Your Mouth.
Keep em comin'!

Hey TripleJ! Looks like you're doing for the '80s and '90s what I'm doing with the '50s-'70s with my No One Else Remembers posts. Glad to see it.
A couple of the titles sound a little familiar, (but then again what I had for lunch an hour ago only sounds slightly familiar. ) Charlotte Ann and Bad Reputation sound vaguely familiar. I will try to find clips and see if I know them.

I know Julian Cope, but only World Shut Your Mouth. Yeah, when I looked up Julian on the AMG Music Guide site, I recognized that title "World Shut Your Mouth." I can't recall if I ever heard it or not. I'll have to look that one up too.

And yeah, I'll stick to the 80's & 90's on my posts.

Well, I'm very pressed for time, but I know 3 of these, and have one other that I just don't listen to..
"Kayleigh" I remember from the 80's, very Genesis sounding.
"Here's Where The Story Ends" I liked The Sundays back in the early 90's. I don't listen to them much now, but they were a good mellow pop group.
"Welcome To The Boomtown" I remember this, It got a bit of airplay in '86.
"Wide Boy" I have The Riddle on tape, so I have the song, but I can't remember ever playing it.
Also, I've heard other songs by Julian Cope and Freedy Johnston. Not these, though.. Blvd is the only artist I'm drawing a blank on..

I know two songs Bad Reputation - Freedy Johnston - love his music!! this tune is so incredibly good . I first became aware of Freedy when he appeared on Conan O' Brien's show in 94? - something like that - and he sang On The Way Out . When I first started downloading music and burning my own discs. He was one of the first artists I looked for. Welcome To The Boomtown - Another fine tune! I remember my brother buying the LP at the time and hearing this on the radio. I also like the song Swallowed By The Cracks. I've heard of The Sundays and Julian Cope but have never heard any of the music. Nik Kershaw - The only tune I know of his is Wouldn't it Be Good.

I know 5 out of 7!!! Do I get a prize? ;D Kayleigh - I remember this from the earlier days of MTV Here's Where The Story Ends - I love this album so much. I have gone through like 3 copies because I've played it so much. They've never been able to top this album IMO, but they are amazing to see play live. Bad Reputation - Another fave. I've liked Freedy Johnston for about 10 years. He's never gotten enough recognition. He's another person that is wonderful to see perform live. Wide Boy - Reminds me of junior high! Welcome To The Boomtown - Reminds me of highschool in good ways. A great song from a great album.

Darn copy-and-paste won't work in the library...
Kayleigh--Great tune I haven't heard in a while. Charlotte Anne--played it some in college--not bad. Never give up--not ringing a bell ...Story ends--not a big fan of 'em. Bad reputation--came at a time when some GOOD top 40 music was starting to fall apart. If still played today, this is EASILY "Adult alternative". GREAT tune. Wide boy--should look up Nik's music, based on how much I LOVE "Wouldn't it be good". Boomtown--never liked it for some odd reason. "Ain't so easy" was better.
