I'm back to work next week! Let's roll on!
650. DANCING MACHINE-Jackson 5(74) (#2-B'board, #4-DJD)('87 rank-573)
This packed the discotheques much like their early tunes, and the "true" disco sound was almost there on this. Great record.
649. SHOUT-Tears for Fears(85) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-572)
A much more powerful effort than former #1 "Rule the World". LOVED this outta the box. Though repetitive, cool to hear the album version. No, not the Isleys tune...
648. DON’T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME-George Michael with Elton John(92) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #2-DJD)('87 rank-none)
Recorded live at Wembley, George did a fine version of Elton's tune. Then imagine when some cloaked guy comes up on stage--it's Elton himself! Power duo to say the least.
647. LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE-Monkees(66) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)('87 rank-571)
3rd of their 5 in my big 1K. The one that got it rollin' for them. The TV show proved instantly successful, and their records were just as popular.
646. HALF-BREED-Cher(73) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)('87 rank-570)
Her second solo #1, and followed along somewhat of the same sorta story line as her first #1-"Gypsies...".
645. WILL YOU LOVE ME TOMORROW-Shirelles(61) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)('87 rank-780)
Like "Save the Last Dance...", a great tune for its time. Many fine remakes followed, many putting "still" in the title.
644. LIVE TO TELL-Madonna(86) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #8-DJD)('87 rank-569)
Wow--her 6th time in the top thou...so far. In the last 10 years, this ballad from the movie "At close range" hasn't impressed me much, so expect a BIG dive next list.
643. THANK YOU (FALETTINME BE MICE ELF AGIN)-Sly & the Family Stone(70) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)('87 rank-567)
Funky number that fit in well with the early 70's. I feel the guitar groove is somewhat similar in "Play that funky music". No matter, this is their 1st of 3 in the big thou, and they're all DYNAMITE.
642. OH SHERRIE-Steve Perry(84) (#3-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD)('87 rank-566)
While still lead singer of Journey, Steve stepped out solo and scored an instant smash--pop, album rock, even adult contemporary! Still good to hear.
641. GIVE IT UP-ZZ Top(91) (#78-B'board, #1-8 wks-DJD)('87 rank-none)
Another surprise, yet I LOVED the Toppers' music around this time. Bought the cassette "Recycler" first day of release, and this became my instant fave, and it's never been otherwise since. So glad it made the POP HOT 100, as well as the Greatest Hits. My #1 song of 1991. YEAAAHHH!!!
640. SHAME ON THE MOON-Bob Seger(83) (#2-B'board, #2-DJD)'87 rank-563)
His 2 biggest on Billboard are his 2 biggest on here. That COULD change next list. Both songs right near each other! And neither made the first greatest Hits, but deservedly both made the 2nd hits CD. A slow country feel that got away from his rock roots.
639. SENTIMENTAL LADY-Bob Welch(77/78) (#8-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD)('87 rank-562)
After 26 1/2 years, I still LOVE it. Especially now that I've dug into earlier FMac work, I've only liked Bob's music more in general today. And fittingly, Lindsey and Christine are on backing vocals.
638. SHAKEDOWN-Bob Seger(87) (#1-1 wk-B'board, #5-DJD)('87 rank-491)
His lone #1; a more pop feel than most of his catalog. In the film "Bev. Hills Cop 2", the song was turned down by Glenn Frey. "You're busted!"
637. I'M NOT IN LOVE-10cc(75) (#2-B'board, #4-DJD)('87 rank-561)
Simply one of the best, period. The tune with over 200 overdubbed tracks! For that reason, often something new to discover in the song with every listen. I loved it much by the late 70's.
636. TAINTED LOVE-SoftCell(82) (#8-B'board, #4-DJD)('87 rank-560)
Spent pretty much the whole year 1982 on the chart--40 weeks--a record for the time! Unforgettable for its time. The UK synth duo's only HOT 100 hit; "Sex dwarf" was back at #12309 on my list. Eternally love it.
635. SOMEBODY TO LOVE-Jefferson Airplane(67) (#5-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD)('87 rank-558)
Many groups that lasted a while had great music for over 2 decades--this is no exception. This was a deserved smash, and classic rock and oldies radio has kept this alive in a great way! 2 more in the survey as "Starship".
634. TAKE A BOW-Madonna(94/95) (#1-7 wks-B'board, #3-DJD)('87 rank-none)
One I DO still like quite a bit today. Fine tune produced by Babyface; her biggest Billboard single ever. Also on the ballad compilation "Something to Remember". Yes, there ARE more from her...
633. BEST THAT YOU CAN DO-Christopher Cross(81) (#1-3 wks-B'board, #2-DJD) ('87 rank-557)
AKA Arthurs Theme. "When you get caught between the moon & NYC". Great Oscar-winning smash; the Texan's overall biggest.
632. ALIVE AND KICKING-Simple Minds(85) (#3-B'board, #3-DJD) ('87 rank-440)
I've always liked this even more than "Don't you"(coming up). Solid album rock track; great piano.
631. OUT OF TOUCH-Hall & Oates(84) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #4-DJD) ('87 rank-553)
One of my fave groups of all-time. My least fave of their #1's, and that's saying something! Usually play this with "Dance on your knees".
630. DOWN ON THE CORNER-CCR(69) (#3-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) ('87 rank-552)
Ranking higher than 3 of their 5 #2 hits. Their 2nd tune I knew, and always been one of my faves of them. Tap your feet!
629. THE WILD BOYS-Duran Duran(84/85) (#2-B'board, #1-2 wks-DJD) ('87 rank-446)
3rd of their 6 in the big thou. The studio track tacked onto their "live" album. Nothing very special today, but still like it.
628. EMOTIONAL RESCUE-Rolling Stones(80) (#3-B'board, #2-DJD) ('87 rank-551)
Mick sings falsetto! Great groovin' track that was one of their few dance/disco chart entries.
627. SOLDIER OF LOVE-Donny Osmond(89) (#2-B'board, #1-3 wks-DJD) ('87 rank-none)
Just when you thought he was yesterday's hero! He's now been in the biz for over 40 years! Great synth-pop track that echoed George Michael somewhat.
626. IF YOU WANNA BE HAPPY-Jimmy Soul(63) (#1-2 wks-B'board, #1-1 wk-DJD) ('87 rank-550)
Ending off here with another great oldie. Comical in approach, fine rhythm!
More to come...
650. DANCING MACHINE-Jackson 5(74) (#2-B'board, #4-DJD)('87 rank-573)
