What I listened to on my Autumn Vacation

This is a feature that I've done a couple of other times. My wife and I generally go down to the shore (Ocean City, MD) for a week or two in the fall. Off season prices, no crowds, nice weather, and peace. ;D I would always take a stack of CDs with me.

In previous years, I would bring a laptop down with me to check emails etc, and I would post a list of the songs on one cd every day. Well, this year I didn't take a laptop, but I did take cds. Well, we've been back almost a week now, and I thought I'd post some of the cds I brought with me.

We'll start today with a double cd that I burned from various sources that I've called "The Early Recordings of Pink Floyd" A lot of Syd Barrett stuff here and other pre-Dark Side breakout stuff

These three kind of flow together for me. Not spectacular, but unlike anything else at the time.

Intro I like, but the song goes nowhere

7. Jugband Blues (3:00)
Barrett's swan song with the group

10. The Nile Song (3:26)
these two songs were from a foreign film calle d"More" that they did the soundtrack to. I've never seen it, but the plot sounds interesting, although sad.

11. Biding My Time (5:18)
I've always loved this track, that starts out misty and moody then eventually becomes swinging jazz.

Like Pete, I hadn't realized you were a fan of the early Barrett-era Floyd material, Ed. This is a great collection of songs; I may have to burn a disc for myself based on your tracklisting.

Yes. I became a big Floyd fan only about a year or so ago. I had listened to some of their more familiar stuff back in the day, but never really got into them. But about a year ago, I revisited Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Meddle, The Wall, and Animals, and read a bit about them and realized what an influence Syd apparently was on them even after he left. So I decided to investigate. This trouble album is the result.

Some of the early stuff (Arnold Layne, See Emily Play) is quite Beatle-like. Not surprising.

Tres cool! I like the really early stuff, but always thought they hit their peak with "Ummagumma" and "Meddle"

I've found lots of their stuff on Youtube.

I'm really burnt out on Floyd from '73 - '79, but I do like assorted tracks from '67 - '71

Shortly after I read of Syd's death, I was listening to a BBC Syd / Floyd documentary on the internet and decided to make a CD of my favorite tracks from "Piper."

"Flaming" (I love the "homemade" wind sound effects )appears twice - in both mono and stereo mixes) the others are:

"Arnold" and "See Emily Play" are classic examples of british psych - pop.
