Review of Brian Wilson show 6/14/03

Well, I saw Brian Wilson for the fourth time the other night! The show was awesome from beginning to end, although it sounded like the band was a little off for the first two numbers. We got there late (didn't miss the start of the show, but it was general seating), so we gidn't get a very good view. Brian powered his way through an interesting mix of classics and obscurities. It was also announced that earlier that day Northeastern University had awarded Brian Wilson with his first honorary doctorate in music! So, the band did an INCREDIBLE accapella version of "Graduation Day" for "Dr. Brian Wilson".

Here, to the best of my knowledge, is the set list (I can't remember the exact order, but the first three are correct):

There may have been one or two more, but I think that's most of them.

After the show, we waved to Brian as he got into his limo. He didn't do a meet-and-greet this time, but I'd already met him once before anyway, so I was not dissapointed!

It was also announced that this was one of only TWO concert appearances he would be doing this summer (The other one is tonight in New York). So it was good to have caught one of them!

Also, it was also announced that next summer he will be doing the SMILE tour!! I don't know if anything is going to actually be released or not, but I can't believe that he is actually going to perform these songs that for years he would deny the existance of! That is one show that I WILL NOT miss!!

What a set list! Sail on Sailor, You're So Good to Me, Darlin', Don't Worry Baby, Please Let Me Wonder! WOW! The only thing that could top that would be Surf's Up and 'Til I Die back to back!

Was this a major concert theatre? Do you have to be like in a fan club to do the meet and greet?

Wow, sounds like a great show, Pete! I haven't heard him sing in years. Is his voice still good? How about the band-- are they very "Beach Boy-like?"

I saw the Beach Boys live in concert only once and that was 39 years ago!! I'm assumung you saw the concert somewhere in the Boston area if they were at Northeastern earlier in the day. The concert I saw wasn't all that far away. They performed in a club/hall in Nantasket Beach.

It was an outdoor concert. But there was a pretty big crowd there! No, usually you just have to fight your way through the crowd to meet-and-greet. I never joined a fan club..

I've heard him do "Til' I Die" live before. Next year he will do "Surf's Up"!

Also, add "California Girls" and "Do It Again" to the set list. Can't believe I forgot those!!

Yes, it was at the Hatch Shell, an outdoor venue right on the Charles River. Great place to see a show (except for the noisy traffic on Storrow Drive!)

Brian's voice is holding up well, for a 62 year old man who's had the life he's had. It was off in places, but people expect that, we're just glad that he's still able to do this!

The band was great! Of course, the bandleader, Jeff Foskett, was a member of the Beach Boys touring band for MANY years, so he knows the material well!

That's great, Pete - it sounds like it was an excellent show! That's a very impressive list of songs! He's been through so much in his life, and it's good to know that he's still making great music.
