This question was asked on YL occasionally, but I don't think it's been asked here, yet. Feel free to add any other "firsts", such as cassette, 8 track, etc.
The first 45 I ever owned was "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" by Lynn Anderson. For some reason, I just loved that song, and begged my mom to buy it for me one day when we were at the Five and Dime. And she did! I was so happy. LOL!
Can't really remember the first album I owned, but it was probably something by Donny Osmond or the Partridge Family, since they were my "teen idols" way back when.
I'm ashamed to admit the first CD I ever bought. LOL! My husband and I bought a CD player, and didn't have any CD's, so we ended up buying the soundtrack to "Ghostbusters 2" because it was on sale. Yes, I still have the CD, but no, I haven't listened to it for years. ;D
And you?

The first 45 I ever owned was Paul McCartney & Wings' 'Band on the Run'. I remember hearing that on the car radio back in the spring of 1974 and falling it love with it immediately. 29 years later, it's still my all-time favorite song! Other than children's albums, the first LP I owned was a Ktel compilation, either Dance Machine or Super Gold, from around 1976. My first cassette was Michael Jackson's Thriller, bought back in the spring of 1983. I literally wore that tape out! I'm not positive about the first CD, but I think it was the Best of the Rippingtons, back in 1999. I was really into smooth jazz at that time.

I know I've done this on YL and also on ML, but what the heck.
45 -- "Hard To Get" - Giselle MacKenzie 1955 "X" Records
L.P. -- Calypso - Harry Belafonte 1957 RCA Victor
8 - Track -- I think I only bought one. Can't remember the title, but it was by Ian and Sylvia and included the track "A Nova Scotia Farewell"
Cassette - I used to buy blank tapes and record them. Don't own any pre-recorded cassettes (I held out and stuck with vinyl as ling as I could). I did by my sone a Bangles Cassette in the mid 80s. He liked them when he was young. It's the one that had Manic Monday and Walk Like an Egyptian on it.
CD - The Original Broadway Cast performance of "Showboat"

The first thing I got was three LPs, simultaneously.
They were:
Greatest Hits of Herman's Hermits, vol. 1
Freak Out! (Mothers of Invention)
Surrealistic Pillow (Airplane)
First 45 RPM was "They're Coming to Take Me Away,Ha Ha".
I have no idea what the first cassette was.
Never had 8-tracks, and don't have CDs.

Hi Dawn:) The Rippingtons - I'm impressed I believe my brother has one of their CD's - I can't recall which one though. They're one of my favorite smooth jazz groups! I can't recall exactly how I was first introduced to their music, but I've really liked it ever since, and have several cassettes in addition to that Best of. Is your brother a fan of other jazz groups?

Is your brother a fan of other jazz groups? Yeah he is - he likes all types of music, but he goes to our local jazz festival every year.

Gee, I was rude to never answer this! First 45-I had so many hand me downs, but one of my first was probably Another Brick in the Wall Part 2. First LP-Again, lots of hand me downs, then 2 K-Tels. I think my first official bought for me was Hall & Oates Rock-n-Soul Part 1. First CD-My ex got me 5 with my first player. Beatles Rubber Soul, Past Masters, Past Masters II, Robert Plant Now and Zen, Led Zeppelin In Through the Out Door. First cassette-Now this I remember! LOL! Bruce Springsteen Born in the USA. 8-track-Never had one growing up. I got my step mother's hand me down stereo with all her 8 tracks. A couple Barry Manilow and a live Beach Boys album. The rest were pretty non-descript. I do still have Bekki's Muppet Movie 8 track!

First 45: Tiny Dancer - Elton John (I don't remember the B side)
First LPs: I got 4 albums for Xmas in 1978 along with my very own first record player - a Bee Gees phonograph!. K-Tel Superstar Collection (still one of my favorite albums of all time) K-Tel Starburst Wings Greatest Hits Andy Gibb - Flowing Rivers
First 8-track: Beatles - Hard Days Night (although technically I think this was a gift to my mom from our cousin - I took it though)
First cd: I was a little late to the CD player. Through much of college I had this fantastic record player and stereo and I kept all of my records in great shape. I didn't get a cd player until late 1992. I signed up for one of those Columbia House "get 10 cds for a penny" deals using a fake name and picked out a random assortment of cds from their rather limited list. I don't remember all of the cds but here are a few that I know I still have in my collection: Partridge Family Greatest Hits ABBA - Gold Duran Duran - Rio Elvis Costello - Greatest Hits Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil
I have no recollection of what my first cassette was - probably something from the Go Gos, or Tears For Fears?

I remember the first 2 "music" albums I ever bought...they were Band On The Run by Paul McCartney and Wings and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John. Before that, I had The Electric Company soundtrack and The Chipmunk Christmas Album. I can remember my mom taking me to TG&Y to buy all of them.
I can't really remember the first 45. It might have been Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain? Or something like that.
