Hi Dawn.
An album I can relate to. (By this time, you've probably figured that I'm more into oldies than classic rock, so my album knowledge is limited - it's not that I don't like classic rock, I do)
IMO, a good, but not great Beatles effort here. Several tracks that I like, however including the title track, Hide Your Love Away, I Need You, Your Going To Lose That Girl, Ticket To Ride, I've Just Seen A Face, and Act Naturally. Good cover on Lizzie also.
I haven't listened or even looked at the album in quite a while. I didn't remember Yesterday and It's Only Love being on this album. I thought I remember Yesterday being on the Yesterday and Today album, and It's Only Love being on Rubber Soul. It may be the British vs US version thing, or it may be that recent cds don't exactly copy the old vinyl. Anyway, regardless of where those two songs appear, I love 'em both.

Great one! So much better than the "Bastard" American version!
With songs like "Hide Your Love", "Yesterday", "Seen a Face" and others, it was obvious the Beatles were headed in the Rubber Soul direction. This was one of the steps.
All the soundtrack songs are excellent. Actually, the title cut is the weakest track, for my money. But I like how John said the lyrics were "honest".
As for "side 2", 9-12 are killer! Number 11 is the best on the album to me. Of course Yesterday is a legendary piece, but so is Sounds of Silence, and I am sick of both!
The two covers are average.

Something of a mixed bag (and the movie was a comedown from "Hard Day's Night"), but I really like:
I Need You (all those minor chords)
Another Girl (great dance song)
It's Only Love
You Like Me Too Much (great jazzy electric piano that moves the song along)

I may be in the minority for saying this, but I actually liked a couple of the George Martin instrumentals on the American soundtrack, at least "The Bitter End/You Can't Do That" and "From Me To You Fantasy". None of the instrumentals I particularly NEED to have on CD, though..
A lot of great album cuts here. Hard to believe that in England, "Yesterday" was just another album cut until the mid 70s.

A great album to kick the week off with! I listened to my brother's LP alot as a kid . It's also the first Beatles movie I saw - I was around 10 at the time , back when they still showed them on TV I have it on both LP and CD . Over the years the instrumentals have actually grown on me more and more . I think Help! is among John's best . A terrific album throughout. Faves Help , Another Girl , I Need You (god bless George) , You're Gonna Lose That Girl (Killer tune) , I've Just Seen a Face , The Night Before , It's Only Love, Ticket To Ride and so on . Even though alot of people regard You Like Me To Much as one of the weaker tracks I've always loved it:)

You're right, H2 - this particular CD is the British version, but like you, I'm still used to hearing 'Yesterday' and 'It's Only Love' on Yesterday and Today and Rubber Soul. It does get a little confusing when the album versions don't correspond to each other well. I've always preferred the American versions of the albums, primarily because they include a lot of single releases that were left off the British albums.

As I mentioned to H2, I've always preferred the American versions of their albums, mainly because more songs are included in the overall catalog (although with the release of Past Masters, that may have changed). But I see your point when it comes to individual albums, especially in the middle period, when their music was really developing and changing. 'Tell Me What You See' is a really good song. Because it's not as well known, sometimes I kind of forget how much I like this song until I listen to it.

It's enjoyable to watch, but not nearly as witty as A Hard Day's Night. I've always thought 'I Need You' is one of George Harrison's best compositions while he was with the Beatles. 'Another Girl' is also a favorite of mine - I love the guitar work on it!

I understand and agree with your point about the singles being on the American versions, but you got more songs per album on the British versions! That's true - I think most British albums contained 14 tracks, as opposed to 11 for the American versions. Those extra cuts do make a difference, especially on Rubber Soul and Revolver.

I've never minded those instrumentals either - they're actually pretty interesting. I agree, it is hard to believe 'Yesterday' wasn't released as a single in England in 1965. I've heard different explanations as to the reason why, but I think the most probable one was that it didn't sound very much like the songs they had done up until that time.

It's a good movie - not quite on a par with A Hard Day's Night, but still fun to watch. And the music is great! 'You Like Me Too Much' is one of those tracks that, as with 'Tell Me What You See', I sometimes forget how much I enjoy it until I listen to it. It's a really good song, and should be getting more airplay than it does. From first song to last, this is a very solid album!
