Tom's very best, and contains my fave Petty tune! This was my first Petty album. Of course I knew the two singles, Refugee and Don't Do Me Like That as a kid. Then listening to classic rock, I heard Here Comes My Girl and Even the Losers. Years after hearing Here Comes My Girl, it became my fave. Love the way he sings it, and it really sounds different than any other TP song. BTW-on the box set, they cut the spoken intro to Losers!

Hi Dawn - I'm off to the swap meet this morning but before I leave I wanted to answer the post .
Even though I had read a bit about Tom I had never heard anything until this album was released(love the cover photo (nice Rickenbacker guitar!) .
I remember my middle brother buying the album when it came out. Heard Refugee lots, remember seeing the video too. So many great songs.
I've had my copy on vinyl for quite a few years now and many of the songs are included on the fantastic Playback box set. The album STILL sounds amazing today!
Faves : Here Comes My Girl , Even The Losers , Refugee , Don't Do Me Like That , Louisiana Rain , Shadow of a Doubt and Century City.

I loved the singles growing up, but didn't hear many of the album cuts until fairly recently. 'Here Comes My Girl' has started to get airplay here as well - I actually hear it more often than I do the singles. Great song! I hate it when they chop up the songs like that! You'd think on a box set, they'd leave them all intact!

Like you, I wasn't familiar with Tom's music prior to the release of this album - somehow, I missed hearing his earlier songs like 'Breakdown'. I remember 'Refugee' and 'Don't Do Me Like That' got lots of airplay back in the day, though. I'd love to get his box set sometime. I have his older Greatest Hits, but it's missing a lot of great songs, including one of my favorites, 'Change of Heart'.

My fave on this album is "Even the Losers". I do like "Refugee" and "Don't do me like that". 'Even the Losers' is great, one of the strongest album tracks, IMO. The singles have been favorites of mine for years!

Hi Dawn -
I think this is Tom's best work. Every song's a winner. I've played this album (vinyl) so many times it sounds like rice krispies (every snap, crackle, & pop). But isn't that the way music was meant to be heard.
This album has my favorite Petty song, Louisiana Rain. It's such a sad sounding song (say that fast 3 times), and he does a marvelous job on it. Other favorites: Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That, Here Comes My Girl, You Tell Me, What Are You Doing in My Life.

I agree, there's something kind of neat about listening to the all the crackles and pops on old vinyl records. To me, that says that an album has been well-loved and well enjoyed. This is definitely an album to be played over and over - a classic! 'Louisiana Rain' is a really good track.

My favorites are "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That".
When I was a freshman in high school, I remember this person carrying a boom box blasting "Refugee" after school.
