The power of this album is evident in the fact that no less than 7 of the original 12 tracks made the original box set! And honestly, 2 others coulda, shoulda made it as well!
I'm not sure which Rhino reissue I got first on vinyl, but I am guessing this had to have been one of the first. It is certainly the most listener friendly. Not only do you have the double sided hit I'm a Believer/Steppin' Stone (the former the number one song of 67), but you had popular show cuts such as She, Mary, Mary and Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow). Any one of those could have been a successful single. Grizelda is probably the most famous Peter track, and usually his featured song in concert to this day. Sometime in the Morning is a great ballad.
The other two cuts that shoulda made the box are The Kind of Girl I Could Love and Laugh. To be honest, I like them both WAY more the double single. (But of course those wouldn't be left off). I kept putting off getting this on disc, but I need to now, for those 2 great tracks.
Hold on Girl is much better in the slowed down alternate version on Missing Links Volume 2.
The bonus tracks should be interesting. I swear no one has more unreleased stuff than these guys!

The first Monkees album I remember hearing . I played my brother's copy all the time when I was little.
I have a very nice original copy on vinyl. I don't have it on disc(although it would be nice to hear the bonus tracks:) but I do have the box - set.
Always loved Sometime in the Morning !
Other faves: Laugh , Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow) , Mary, Mary,When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door) , I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone (I also like Paul Revere's version too) , I'm a Believer , The Kind of Girl I Could Love.

This is definitely one of the Monkees' best albums, with many excellent cuts. I agree with you about those three songs being potential singles. The quality and depth of their catalog is amazing. I have this on vinyl, but I'd like to get this on disc myself - those bonus cuts sound like they would be great. I'd like to get the box set you mentioned as well!

Hang on to that original LP, Ken - it's pretty rare to find their albums in really good shape nowadays! There are so many wonderful songs on this album. The singles have always been favorites of mine, but album cuts such as 'Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)', 'Sometime in the Morning' and 'Mary, Mary' are great, too.

So what if their early songs are prefabricated? I... LOVE... the Monkees! The only tracks I'm not too keen on are "When Love Comes Knockin'" and "The Day We Fall In Love." I haven't really listened to the bonus tracks. A better version of "I Don't Think You Know Me," sung by Micky, is a bonus on their first CD.
