My friends and I were really into him at the time. Over the years though, I have sort of gotten sick of the big songs.
But, this was part of a long line of big albums of his from the MTV era. American Fool, Uh Huh, Scarecrow, and Lonesome Jubilee were all huge.
My cousin was (is) big into him, and my aunt wanted to get her a sweatshirt that was free when you buy the album. Of course my cousin already had it, so that copy was given to me for my birthday.
Sorta tired of Lonely Ol' Night, Rain on the Scarecrow is ok, never really liked Rumble Seat. And I NEVER liked R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. The best tune here is Small Town.
I think that last tune may be a bonus CD track??

Yes!!! One of the Hoosier rocker's best! The last CD tune "The kind of fella I am" is a bonus cut. And somewhat the opposite comment of Sat on the 5 hits. Always LOVED "R.O.C.K." BIG TIME (my 3rd fave in fact after American fool's 2 biggest). Also LOVE "Rumbleseat" (NEVER played anymore). Still love listening to "Lonely ol night" and "Scarecrow" today as well. But "Small town" (YES!) is EASILY his most overplayed on the radio today (way more than Wild Night). Yet one of his better videos. (If I play it, MUST have the "Granny" intro- Cut 2) Also love "Stand/Something", "Face of the nation" and "Justice".
Bravo!

Really like this album. Used to listen to it quite a bit when it was popular. Kinda tired of Rain on the Scarecrow and Small Town, but still enjoy listening to the other tunes. Especially Lonely Ol' Night, and R.O.C.K. Minutes to Memories is probably my favorite on here.
There's a line in Lonely Ol' Night that says "She calls me baby. She calls everybody baby." I have a friend who used to call people "baby" ALL the time. No matter what the situation, if you were talking to her, she'd eventually call you "baby". I always wondered if maybe Mellencamp might have met her before and used her for the inspiration for that line. LOL!

You're right about the MTV-era albums - all those were really successful, and are his best work, IMO. 'Rain on the Scarecrow' is my favorite, but 'Small Town' is great, too. Yes, 'The Kind of Fella I Am' is a bonus track. I'm not familiar with it, as I have this album on cassette, but if it's similar to the rest of the album, it should be pretty good.

'Rain on the Scarecrow' reminds me so much of my senior year of high school. I used to listen to this tape often while driving to and from school and my part-time job, and I would always play that song several times!
