This was another big album during Grade 12 . Everybody I knew was listening to it - I didn''t have the album at the time - it was however one of the first CD's I bought- a buddy had it on cassette and we would listen to it in his car. Remember seeing them perform with Sting at Live Aid.
Faves - Why Worry , So Far Away , Money For Nothing , Walk Of Life , Your Latest Trick and Brothers in Arms (I seem to reacall the video for this being very cool - I believe it was similiar in style to A -ha's video for Take on Me?

With Afterburner, this was my other HUGE fave of 10th grade. 6 years was just too long for their following album, and I couldn't get to liking that as much. Most of their earlier efforts were great, but this one reached a commercial zenith. Another one well lodged in my top 20 albums ever. Mark's guitar, always so good! Not quite every song's at least a 9.0, but it's such a mammoth winner with me. Funny this should coincide with the recent DS poll. "Chicks for free"!
So far away--A UK hit a full year before it was in the US. Nice, midtempo feel, probably Mark's best vocal on the album. Worth its weight in gold.
Money for nothing--Yeah, way overplayed on rock radio even today (let alone MTV in 1985!). But no matter. A rock classic way beyond compare. One of the most instantly recognizable guitar solos ever, much whimsical lyrics about modern technology, super cameo by Sting, and so much more. Curiously, the CD version's a minute longer than the original LP version, say nothing of the 4 minute single version! This tune also ranks in my top 100 ever, for individual songs.
Walk of life--perhaps the best known song with 2 videos (the underground musician, and the sports bloopers). Another song well in my top 1000, love the keyboard intro! Good song for driving, too! Be-bop-a-lula, baby what'd I say!
Your latest trick--Do I LOVE that sax! Has to be the Straits' most jazzy effort. Love hearing this if played over PA's!
Why worry--Fine ballad. Nothing very special, but listenable.
Ride across the river--Much the same comment as Why worry, but slightly more uptempo.
The man's too strong--Even this got some rock radio play! Great midtempo selection, fine synth percussion.
One world--WOO HOO! My 3rd fave, and why this wasn't a US OR UK single's beyond me! A goodly amount of rock airplay in the fall of '85, this may be just about their most upbeat tune along with "Walk". NEVER tire of it!
Brothers in arms--Superior title track. A small UK hit, didn't seem to get much US airplay. And to this day, I SWEAR "As I lay me down" was copied from this song somewhat. But that was a bag of feathers compared to this song that should be in itself recognized as a masterpiece. And better than most of their tunes from their other albums.
BRAVO!!!

I don't know, I have always felt Dire Straits and this album were overrated. I never saw anything all that great about Mark Knofler's guitar playing either.
I had the first two singles, actually. Got sick of em though.
I borrowed the tape once, and didn't think much of it. Didn't like the title track at all. Yes, Ken the video was like Take on Me.

I had this on cassette back in the day, but I never really listened past the two big hits. But then again, at the time I was more into metal, so I didn't really give it a chance.
"So Far Away" is OK, but the line about "Making out on the telephone" disturbs me... What does he do, stick the reciever in his mouth? LOL
Of course "Money" and "Walk" were EVERYWHERE at the time!

Thanks Adam It's been quite awhile since I've seen that video clip .

I remember this was huge at my high school during 12th grade as well! Like you, I didn't own it myself back then, although a lot of people I knew had it. Listening to the songs always brings back a lot of memories from that time!

BRAVO!!!This was a great suggestion, Dave. I agree, their earlier albums contain some really good songs, but they definitely reached their peak with this album. Although a little overplayed, 'Money for Nothing' is still a favorite of mine. Love the great guitar work and Sting's vocals.

It's true that the singles from this album were a little overplayed back in the day (and still are, to a point). I've never seen the Brothers in Arms video, but it sounds like it would be cool. Maybe I can catch it sometime on VH1 Classic.

LOL about "making out on the telephone"! That is kind of an odd lyric, come to think of it. Good song, though - I really like Mark Knopfler's guitar work on it.

All the singles: "Walk Of Life," "Money For Nothing," "Brothers In Arms," & "So Far Away," are awesome. And "Why Worry" is a very pretty song
