I've noticed everybody else doing older albums, but I don't own much that was recorded before 1980, so I'm gonna start off my run on the album board with Bette Midler's most recently released album. By the way, her next venture will be released September 30. It's titled Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook. Columbia Records has a snippet of each track posted on their site, so if you're a Bette or Rosie fan, you should check it out.
Bette
2000
1. That’s How Heartaches Are Made
This song is amazing. Very smooth and mellow, and Bette’s voice sounds great on it. Reminds me of some of the songs she’s done in the past.
2. In These Shoes
The thing I like most about this song is probably the line, “What is this? The Peace Corps?” It’s a cute, almost novelty, song with a great rhythm. Fun and upbeat.
3. God Give Me Strength
I love the trumpet at the beginning of this song. At least I think that’s what it is...sometimes I have trouble distinguishing the brass instruments. LOL.
4. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
To me, this is better than the Temptations version because it’s from a female perspective. I can relate to it more. Again, Bette’s vocals are wonderful.
5. Love TKO
This song carries through with the relaxed atmosphere of the entire album. It’s very smooth and cool. The lyrics are great.
6. Moses
Always bringing a smile to my face, this track is very fun. Bette performed it as a duet with Dolly Parton on her television show, and I wish that the duet was on the album instead of this version, but unfortunately, no. Oh well. Bette’s solo of the song is great fun too.
7. Nobody Else But You
Another happy tune. It was the theme song to Bette’s show, and I think it fit very well. Love it.
8. Color of Roses
I would say that this is the greatest song on the album. Once more, Bette’s vocals are top-notch, the lyrics are very moving, and the song often brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful can’t even begin to describe it.
9. Bless You Child
Bette certainly made a bold move with this song. It’s a dance tune. I think it really works, despite the fact that it’s a little unusual for Bette to sing. But, as we Betteheads always say, our girl can sing anything.
10. When Your Life Was Low
Another mellow tune. This song’s okay, but it’s not a favorite of mine.
11. Shining Star
This song continues the relaxed style of the album. I can see myself being lulled to sleep by this album, especially with this song.
