The Black Crowes- ”The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion” A great combo of blues, southern rock, and soul…The Black Crowes! I thought they were one of the most appealing rock bands of the 90's...even if they do sound like something from twenty years earlier. And I think lead singer, Chris Robinson, has one of the best voices in rock. Their debut album, “ Shake Your Moneymaker” was great and I thought for sure they’d be one hit wonder. I’m glad I was wrong. “The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion”, released in 1992, wasn’t as immediately successful as the band’s debut. It did eventually hit number one. Only “Remedy” and “Thorn in My Pride” got some radio play. Some other choice tracks on the album are “Sting Me”, “Bad Luck Blue Eyes” and “Sometimes Salvation”. And they do a great job of covering Bob Marley’s “Time Will Tell”. I think it's one of the best southern rock albums to come along since The Allman Brothers or Lynard Skynard's 1970's creative peak.

Hey Andrea! One of the artists that SAVED rock music in the early 90's, along with Lenny Kravitz. Straightforward rock and roll! Who ever thought that would work?? Actually, my wife had this AND the first album both on tape, but I sold them to a used store when the Greatest Hits CD. But, I was trying to eliminate tapes at the time, and I hadn't bothered to investigate the tape further than the hits. The GH has 4 of the songs from this album, and they are good! Remedy is one of my fave songs! LOVE it! Such a great retro sound. I remember loving it the moment I heard it. Good choice, Andrea!

Remedy is one of my fave songs! LOVE it! Such a great retro sound. I remember loving it the moment I heard it. That is a good song. My husband and I used to go hear his friend Rick's band play, and they used to do that one.

Great review! I actually like Amorica and Shake Your Money Maker better as albums but there are some really good tracks on this one.
One of my boyfriend's favorite stories to tell about me is about how I thought that the back-up singers on "Remedy" were singing "Can I have some LEMONADE..." I knew of course the title of the song and could understand what Chris Robinson was singing, but I don't know...the background ladies sounded like they were singing a different refrain. It still sounds like "lemonade" to me. ;D

Superb choice Andrea - I bought the CD as soon as it was released having loved the debut . I couldn't agree more with Adam - They along with Lenny Kravitz and I'd like to add The Smithereens really gave the late 80's and early 90's a much needed kick. I remember the Remedy video being in heavy rotation on Muchmusic at the time. Favorite Tunes - Hotel Illness Remedy Sting Me - a great opener! Thorn in My Pride - love the hammond organ / acoustic guitar / conga combination on the intro Sometime Salvation - Love the guitar crunch No Speak No slave - nice percussion - great guitar as well.

SUPER choice! I just burned it yesterday, with "Remedy" making my burned "all 1992" CD. Ny, the Crowes' music was awesome!

Very nice review, Andrea!
I've just started to become familiar with the Black Crowes' music in the past few months or so, and have been impressed by what I've heard so far. I'll have to investigate this one sometime!
