Celine Dion
Let's Talk About Love
1997
It was with this album (thanks to the presence of Celine’s signature tune - as if you didn’t know what that is) that Celine officially entered the realm of superstardom. All in all, this is her best album to date, IMO. A must-have for any Celine fan.
1. The Reason
This album starts off beautifully with this excellent number penned by Mark Hudson, Greg Wells, and the untouchable Carole King, who also provides the piano here. The song comes full circle, starting out slow and sweet, building to a brassy-voiced bridge and a thundering guitar solo, and ending as lovely as it began.
2. Immortality
Celine’s interpretation of this Bee Gees song is impeccable. The Brothers Gibb provide great background vocals, and the drums are so well...drummed. This track can be used as proof of Celine’s talent when she gets accused of oversinging.
3. Treat Her Like a Lady
As an attempt at hip-hop, this song fails miserably. Celine’s just too white to pull it off. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about this song, but it’s fun and I enjoy listening to it. Love the lyrics.
4. Why Oh Why
This song is good, but Celine’s voice is a little too “Love to Love Ya Baby” for me in certain spots. I usually skip this song.
5. Love Is On The Way
I first heard this song in The First Wives Club, performed by Billy Porter, who does a wonderful job. But I like this version better. The arrangement is a little different, and Celine does an excellent job on the vocals. She’s just right on with every single note.
6. Tell Him duet with Barbra Streisand
My favorite song on the album, for one obvious reason. I love the lyrics too though. It’s the same ol’ tale - girl loves boy but is to scared to tell him. Story of my life. Anyway, the song starts out really slow, and gradually works its way up to an explosive second chorus, and an even bigger following verse. Babs and Celine blend very well, and I envy Celine for this opportunity! This song is just amazing on so many levels.
7. Where Is The Love
Pretty ditty (tee hee) with beautiful guitar and what I believe to be bongo drums.
8. When I Need You
Sung in a lower octave than the Leo Sayer version (thank God_, this song is nicely done, and the best of the music comes from synthesizers. Cheaters! But, it does sound good.
9. Miles To Go (Before I Sleep)
A favorite of mine. Celine hits several low notes in this song that my soprano could never touch. She is great on this one, and I really like the lyrics. It’s all about an earth-shattering love that people like myself only dream of. Could explain why I like the song so much.
10. Us
Yet another great song. It’s go big choruses, just like I love, and amazing lyrics. Also, a very vocally fun (and challenging) song to sing along with. Honestly, I can’t give this song enough praise. Incredible.
11. Just a Little Bit of Love
This reminds me a lot of one of Celine’s earlier songs, Love Can Move Mountains, with its gospel-like intro. Very upbeat. This song is also very good.
12. My Heart Will Go On
After hearing this song on the radio 100 million times, I still love it. My chorus actually performed it once, and we had this exchange student named Azusa play the recorder during the intro (done in the song by a pennywhistle). This song is perfect in every way, and it still brings me to tears sometimes. Of course, I no longer cry because Leonardo DiCaprio dies in the movie. I’m able to put myself into the song, which makes it ten times better than it already is.
13. I Hate You Then I Love You duet with Luciano Pavarroti
In six years, I have listened to this song once, and even that was torture. This is probably my least favorite song of all-time. I hate it more than anything. Seriously.
14. To Love You More
I adore this song. I used to feel like I lived the lyrics (it was really just a silly crush), but the song is still great. The violin solo near the middle is brilliant; Celine’s vocals are incredible. The radio edit of this song leaves out almost all of my favorite section - the “oh oh oh”s in the last minute of the song. (They also omit the violin solo.) This section of the song may have some people saying, “End it already!” but I just love singing along with this part to see if I can hold the notes as long as Celine.
15. Let's Talk About Love
With a different beginning and end, this song would be great. But the intro doesn’t match the rest of the song, and the end (with repeated choruses by a group of kids) gets annoying after a while. Other than that, this song closes out this (mostly) great CD beautifully.
