Better late than never. I’m posting this at 11:00 PM PST so it’s Saturday to most of you. Hopefully my work will let up soon so I can get back here on a regular basis.
I decided to review one of the most recent of my cd purchases, and something that hasn’t left my car stereo since I got it:
[glow=red,2,300]Life For Rent[/glow] – Dido
I fell in love with Dido Armstrong’s first album I’m No Angel. I became acquainted with Dido a few years before her first album hit here in the states so I’ve been waiting for something new from her for a long time. I haven’t been disappointed with her latest effort. Dido has a way with lyrics so that her melancholy trip-hoppy-pop love songs have this wonderful romantic and yet pragmatic edge to them. It’s like her songs are saying “This relationship’s a mess, but it’s my mess and I love it.” Musically the songs on this album are similar to her previous efforts - and that’s okay. I love that she still uses a lot of strings in her songs. A little violin never hurts whether it’s a dance track or ballad.
Tracks:
1. White Flag - this is the first single and some of you might be familiar with it already. There's something about the sentiment of this one that just gets to me. I really like it a lot.
2. Stoned - A song that laments a new relationship that's already starting to get stagnant. I love the chorus: "Cause if you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best things I would love to do for you"
3. Life For Rent - The title track is so well done. It's about realizing that your life isn't as you dreamed but knowing that you also haven't made any effort to make things happen. The song is full of resignation but also hope.
4. Mary’s in India - this is the weakest track on the album for me. It's a girl singing to her old friend Mary who's just left a "dear John" letter for her boyfriend.
5. See You When You’re 40 - an unexpectedly well done track. This for me is the first of 4 tracks in the middle of this album that I love listening to over and over.
6. Don’t Leave Home - one of my favorite tracks. A strange love song that I find uplifting.
7. Who Makes You Feel - another amazing track that probably has the most "dance" feel to it. It starts off soft and builds to this funky powerful beat. Dido is telling her lover all the reasons why their affair is dying but also saying that she loves him and wants to make it work.
8. Sand In My Shoes - a great song that completely invokes that feeling of nostalgia and regret that one can get after having a one-night stand in a foreign land.
9. Do You Have a Little Time - Lovely lyrics: "You will find me standing by
Over here at the side of your life
I'd like to hold you still, remind you of all you've missed"
10. This Land is Mine - a song about wanting love but not wanting to give up your independence.
11. See the Sun - a "get well card" sung to a friend.
Christmas is only about 7 weeks away so that means that I'll soon be listening to a lot of holiday music but for now this album has prominent position in my cd player.
