Today's album is one of my favorite 60's albums of all time.
My brother's had the album in the house while I was growing up and I listened to it a lot!
I don't have the CD reissue but a near mint mono vinyl copy. The CD includes three bonus tracks - the 45 mix of Great Airplane Strike an alternate take of Hungry and an unreleased track You're a Bad Girl - which can also be found on the CD collection Essential Ride - '63 - '67. The album was their sixth release but their fourth since being signed to Columbia Records.
Release Date - November , 1966
Label - Columbia
Produced By - Terry Melcher (Son of Actress Doris Day)
CD Reissue - 2000 (I think
Label - Sundazed
Singles released - Hungry (#6)
- Great Airplane Strike (#20)
- Good Thing (#4)
Michael "Smitty" Smith (RIP) Phil "Fang" Volk and of course Mark Lindsey all share lead vocals on each of the album's 11 tracks.
Good Thing -Mark - The album starts off with this fantastic tune . Love those amazing harmonies.
All About Her - Mark-Kind of a cross between - well to me anyway - LOL Eleanor Rigby and Lady Jane . nice guitar picking in the song.
In My Community -Fang- One of my all time faves . Like the Vox organ / guitar combination on the intro . Nice bass playing and solid drumming - with cowbell- compliment the song.
Louise -Mark - Another winner! great high harmonies - nice backbeat from Smitty love the decending chords leading up to the chorus.
Why ? Why ? Why? (is it so hard)- Fang- Love this one as well. A song about wanting to break up a realtionship and not wanting to face the responsibilty of fatherhood wow! very deep subject matter especially in the mid 60's.
Oh To Be a Man - kind of a dark moody song especially on the outro which features hammond organ , still a very cool little tune.
Side 2 opens with :
Hungry -Mark- Written by the songwriting duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill The first single to be released from the album . superb vocal from Mark . always loved that guitar riff.
Undecided Man - Mark - More similarities to Eleanor Rigby here complete with String quartet and tympani. another flawless vocal and a very strong tune.
Our Candidate - Smitty - A bluesy funky
tune complete with harmonica . A nice little track.
1001 Arabian Nights - Mark - An eastern flavored track - something like The Monkees' Take a Giant Step .
The Great Airplane Strike -Mark- There are two different intro's that were used on the song. One with the sound of nose diving planes the second features a plane explosion. Another fine guitar riff drives the song along. This is one of my brothers faves and yes another of mine too.
Well that's it - hope you've enjoyed reading it
