Now, just tell me if you don't like this review...
The B-52's
Time Capsule: Songs For a Future Generation
1998
There are a lot of artists that, over the years, I have sat and thought to myself, "Hey, _______ is pretty good. Maybe I should check out more of their music." For the longest time, the B-52's were like that to me. So finally I decided that the time had come for me to break down and purchase a B-52's compilation. This was a big step for me. As I'm sure you can all tell, I'm not one to step out of my musical comfort zone (although I've been doing it more and more frequently as of late). I pretty much just stick with certain artists, but after buying this CD, the B-52's joined the prestigious pantheon in my music library and instantly became one of my top three favorite bands of all-time. Okay, that's enough yammering. I'm gonna get to the album now.
1. Planet Claire
One of the greatest things about the B's is their awesome music. Even when the lyrics are a little off, the instrumental stuff rocks. This song has a really long and totally great intro, and Fred Schneider's vocals are quirky, as always.
2. 52 Girls
I rarely sit and listen to an entire album by anyone. I play my favorites off of two or three CDs in one sitting so I can absorb as much different music as possible. From this album, this is one of the tracks I always play. I have an affinity for female vocalists (can you tell?), so the songs where Kate and Cindy sing lead are most often my favorites.
3. Rock Lobster
Who doesn't know this song? Okay, it's kind of odd, to say the least, but it's a fun song.
4. Party Out of Bounds
Another upbeat, cool tune.
5. Strobelight
Cool instrumental stuff, but this song doesn't do much for me.
6. Private Idaho
I absolutely LOVE this intro!
7. Quiche Lorraine
My least favorite song on this album. It's just plain dumb. Except I do like the line, "Quiche La Poodle".
8. Mesopotamia
Not bad, not great.
9. Song For a Future Generation
I always liked this one. The little monologues interspersed throughout the song are very interesting too.
10. Summer Of Love (Original Unreleased Mix)
Another one I play frequently. Hmm...makes me wonder what the released version sounded like.
11. Channel Z
Great guitar on this one. Fun. Love the girls' vocals on this.
12. Deadbeat Club
I'd take this over Love Shack any day! Although I do love that one too. This is my absolute favorite B-52's song. Everything about it is fantastic. I just adore the lyrics. This is my song, man.
13. Love Shack
Sure, this gets a lot of radio airplay. I, personally, could never get enough of it. My favorite band member is Cindy Wilson (the tall blonde one) and she has the best line in the song. It makes absolutely no sense, but I love it - "tin roof...rusted!"
14. Roam
Gorgeous harmonies for my girl Cindy and Kate Pierson. Kate used to be so skinny and gorgeous, and I saw her on Vh1's "I Love the 80's Strikes Back" and I can tell she's put on some weight.
15. Good Stuff
Fair song, but I rarely listen to it.
16. Is That You Mo Dean?
Really odd subject matter, but a very funny song - especially Fred's line about "going to the store for hot dogs and wine". And as usual, great harmonies for the girls.
17. Debbie
This one might even rank above Love Shack for me. Just like Deadbeat Club, this song is perfect.
*A little side note: If you're a B-52's fan, you might want to check out the Cindy Wilson Band. Cindy does an excellent slow-tempo version of Roam.*
18. Hallucinating Pluto
This and the last track were recorded especially for this compilation. Pluto doesn't compare to Debbie, IMO.
Also, additional members of the B-52's are Keith Strickland and Ricky Wilson, who died before the release of the band's 1989 album Cosmic Thing. (If anyone has Cosmic Thing, let me know what you think about it. I'm trying to decide whether I need it or not.)
RIP Ricky Wilson
