Today's pick is
The Smithereens - Blow - Up
Pat Dinizio - Guitar , Vocals
Jim Babjak - Guitars
Mike Mesaros - Bass
Dennis Diken - Drums , Vocals
Released - 1991
Label - Capitol - This was their final album for the label . Following this Capitol would release a best of and a rarities disc , and the guys next album was with RCA.
Produced By - Ed Stasium
Chart Position - #120
Singles Released - Too Much Passion #38 - 1991
A few of the guest artists who appeared on the album :
Steve Berlin - Los Lobos
Carlene Carter
Kevin Savigar - played with Rod Stewart in the late 70's
The Cowsills!
Top of The Pops - A few crunchy power chords and kick ass drumming starts the song off with a bang - The guys do this so well mixing Beatlesque melodies with Who Like power. Jim Babjak delivers a killer guitar solo.
Too Much Passion - This tune gave the band their second - if my memory is correct Top 40 single . A cool pop tune complete with string section. Nice conga playing by top knotch percussionist Alex Acuna.
Tell Me When Did Things Go So Wrong - Well there's certainly nothing "wrong" with this tune. A great driving rhythm moves the song along. Great to crank up while driving down the highway.
Evening Dress - A very nice melodic ballad with some fine ensemble playing.
Get A Hold Of My Heart - This was co - written by Pat and Diane Warren - and Carlene Carter provided backing vocals. I like the combination of electric 12 string and the string section.
Indigo Blues - This has some cool hammond organ and Steve Berlin plays some fine sax - the man can play!
Now and Then - This has a great 60's feel to it . Jim not only play some great lead guitar but also once again unpacks the Rickenbacker 12 string and The Cowsills provide some simply awesome "Wall of sound" background vocals. Drummer Dennis Diken holds it all together hitting everything in sight LOL.
Girl In Room 12 - Another big fave of mine - excellent track. Very nice bass playing from Mike Mesaros.
Anywhere You Are - A neat tune full of minor chords . Just a great feel all around.
Over and Over Again - Love the lyrics to this tune . A brilliant mid tempo song.
It's Alright - A catchy melodic song - simple as that . My cousins and I really love this one.
If You Want The Sun To Shine - This was written by Pat Dinizio and Julian Lennon! and is a winner all around! On the intro the string section sounds very Beatley playing something that would have fit right into I Am The Walrus.
I hope you enjoyed my review and this album is one of The Smithereens finest efforts and deserved alot better. It should IMO have easily gone top 40 instead of stalling at #120.
