Well, I haven't done an album review in a LONG time, and we haven't been doing them on a regular basis lately.
I happened to have this CD with me at work the past few days, and it was one I had intended on reviewing all along. It's my favorite non-Martina country CD.
The Kinleys
II
2000
The Kinleys are blue-eyed blonde twins in their early 30's. Yeah, no kidding guys! They were hot off their first album, 1997's Just Between You and Me, a Grammy nomination for Best Country Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal, and an ACM win for Top New Vocal Duet or Group.
They released II, and it did not receive the critical acclaim the first album did. I personally don't understand it. The songs are better, and showcases their wonderful voices and harmonies much better. The complaint was the first half of the album was done by one producer, and the second half was another. Thus they didn't know "how to play them" on the radio. It was almost like Poco, they were too pop for country, too country for pop.
Anyway, these gals were influenced by another sibling tandem, the Everly's and that shows. Wonderful harmonies, and their vocals are second to Martina. Actually, I think Jennifer who does the background vocals has the superior voice to her sister Heather. (Also better looking! )
She Ain't the Girl For You-This was one of the singles from the album. A bluesy sounding guitar opens up this one. Not the best single from the album, but one of the best songs on the album overall.
I'm in-This was the single that hooked me on them. It was the first country song I liked on my own. I had to introduce it to Bekki. Bought the CD all based on this song. Very seductive sounding singing on the verses. Jennifer echoes the each line of the refrain in a shouting voice that is perfect. My all time fave non-Martina country song.
You're Still Here-A song about a woman trying to move to escape the man, but he is still with her in her heart. Co-written by Jennifer's husband, who tends to join them on stage to sing it.
If Ever I Needed You-A slowy like the previous track. There is a part near the end where they shout out the title line, and again, Jennifer's vocal overpowers Heather's.
That's Gonna Mess You Up-This is an upbeat track. Love the way they rhyme "ego", "mojo" and "out of CUNtrol". LOL! One of my fave of the non-singles on the album.
When the Blues and My Baby Collide-Basically a song about a woman trying to soothe her man. Another slow track, one of my lesser faves, but still sung very well.
Me Too-This track starts the songs that were done by the other producer. MOST of the tracks from here on are upbest numbers. Sort of bouncy little number where the guitaring sort of reminds me of Bonnie Raitt.
Lovers-JUST ADDED THIS ONE IN! Forgot it first time around. Instrumentally, one of the more country sounding songs on here with a fast fiddle.
I'm Me With You-Another of my very faves of the non-singles. Tracks 7-12 tended to blend together for me as being all pleasant, but no standouts. Well this one eventually stood out. The beginning of the song reminds Bekki and I of the music from Hill Street Blues!
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah-Corny title, but some good lines in this song. The best one being-"He says I look like someone that he used to know, only I got bigger.....eyes"! LOL!! Basically a song about a guy jawwing on and on, and the girl putting up here hand eventually. In fact another line says "talk to the hand"!
Here-Sort of a mid-tempo. Sort of brings things down, setting up for the final ballad on the album, which follows.
I Need You Now-A very nice ballad, and one of the first songs I knew by them as it was the B side to their single of I'm in. But in actuality, it's my least fave on the album. (Shows you how strong the album is).
Somebody's Out There Watching-Although not listed as a bonus track, in a way it is. It's not listed as being produced by the same guy who did 7-12, and it had been previously issued on the Touched By an Angel soundtrack. Some of you my know this one. It's definitely my second fave song of theirs.
Basically, if you like female pop, and don't mind a bit of modern country to it, you'll like these girls. Similar to a Sheryl Crow sound, although with more powerful vocals.
Hope you liked the review!
