Carpenters
Carpenters Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition - Disc 1
2004
1. Superstar
The first version I ever heard of this was Bette's, which Richard actually mentions in the liners. Karen really fits right into this song, and the arrangement is perfect for her.
2. Rainy Days and Mondays
I'd have to say this is my favorite Carpenters song. I love the lyrics and the saxophone solo blows me away. This is an absolutely flawless track.
3. Top Of The World
Great!
4. Maybe It's You
Although I've considered myself a Carpenters fan for a while, my familiarity with their music has been fairly limited. In fact, those first three were pretty much all I knew off of this particular disc. This song has quickly become a favorite. The keyboard intro is awesome and Karen's tone is simply gorgeous. Her range is stretched effectively here.
5. Let Me Be The One
Another new favorite. I can't believe this was never released as a single!
6. Reason To Believe
Two thumbs up.
7. Jambalaya (On The Bayou)
This one is quite country (written by Hank Williams) and isn't something I would normally like, but this version is extremely catchy!
8. Leave Yesterday Behind
Pretty.
9. Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore
I like how this builds around the choruses.
10. Bless The Beasts And Children
Upon seeing this I thought, "What a strange name for a song!", only to find out that it was recorded for a film of the same name! Not bad, but I'm having trouble getting past the title.
11. It's Going To Take Some Time
I'd like to hear the original version of this Carole King song just to hear the differences in the arrangements.
12. The Rainbow Connection
I LOVE THIS SONG!! I have always loved it! My chorus performed it twice and this song has always been so much fun for me to sing! Of course, the arrangement is slightly different considering ours was for four voices rather than one...Oh yeah! And I LOVE this version too!
13. Only Yesterday
I love the bass here.
14. Sweet, Sweet Smile
Another country-tinged track. I quite like it. And with my luck, it's gonna be stuck in my head all day.
15. There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World)
Evidently Richard isn't too fond of it, but one of my favorite things about this song is the synthesized "clappy" stuff. It makes me think of those songs the Brady kids used to do. I loved it when they sang!
16. California Dreamin'
The Mamas and The Whos? Seventeen-year-old Karen's vocals blow the other version completely and totally out of the water! This is, by far, the best cover by the Carpenters. Absolulety amazing.
17. Solitaire
Here's another favorite. The lyrics are so beautiful and Karen's vocals are touching.
18. We've Only Just Begun
Although I really like this one, I don't really see why it's considered their signature tune. I'm really taken with Richard's background vocals on this one. And is it just me, or does some of the piano sound really similar to the theme song of "The Young and The Restless"?
19. This Masquerade
Very good.
20. Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft (The Recognized Anthem Of World Contact Day)
For what it is, this song isn't bad. It just seems REALLY out of place.
