Carpenters
Carpenters Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition - Disc 2
2004
1. Yesterday Once More
I especially like the first verse of this song. Karen plays drums here, which I found quite interesting.
2. Please Mr. Postman
There’s still something about the Marvellette’s version of this that I keep going back to, but this is a great spin on the classic Motown original.
3. Hurting Each Other
As with many of the songs on the first disc, I wasn’t familiar with most of these. I can’t believe I’d never run across this one before. I really like it.
4. I Need To Be In Love
Richard says this was Karen’s favorite out of all the songs they recorded together. It “resonated with the way she was feeling at that time”. Well, Karen, we are even more alike than I thought. Many times I feel the exact same way, and with all the pressure people put on you to find someone, the search never gets easier. By the way, here’s my favorite line: “I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world.”
5. Merry Christmas, Darling
There aren’t many Christmas songs that I can listen to out of the context of the holiday season. This is one of the few I can listen to anytime and it still has the same affect.
6. (They Long To Be) Close To You
This is one of my top three favorites by the Carpenters. I used to call it my favorite, but I’ve become really attached to Rainy Days and Mondays recently. Let’s just say this one is an extremely close second. When I listen to it though, I always see this scene now from Will & Grace where Will and Jack are singing the chorus and acting it out. So cute.
7. All You Get From Love Is A Love Song
Not bad, but not one of my favorites.
8. Sing
It’s the Sesame Street song! How strange! It actually became a #3 hit for the Carpenters!
9. Make Believe It's Your First Time
Pretty, but not a stand-out.
10. Ticket To Ride
I absolutely love this as a ballad. The piano is gorgeous and Karen’s alto sounds amazing on the word “care” in the first chorus.
11. Goodbye To Love
The Carpenters were accused of selling out and going hard rock with this song. Oh sure. One electric guitar solo makes you hard rock...Right.
I love the solo, and the piano’s minor chords in the beginning with Karen’s sharp notes sound amazing.
12. I Just Fall In Love Again
Pretty and simple.
13. I Believe You
Another nice love song.
14. Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again
This song went unreleased until 1994, and Karen’s vocals were recorded as a “work lead” but not perfected due to the fact that they decided not to use it at the time. Because of this, you can hear Karen turn the page of her lyric sheet at one point.
15. For All We Know
This was written for the movie Lovers and Other Strangers. Richard and Karen discovered it when they saw the movie, then they decided it could be a hit for them. They were right.
16. Touch Me When We're Dancing
Is this the same as that Alabama song you mentioned in the Song Linking Game, Adam?
17. I Won't Last A Day Without You
I like this one.
18. Mr. Guder
Interesting story behind this one, but it's actually a really good anti-establishment song. Love the arrangement.
19. A Song For You
Kind of a dark love song. Not that the lyrics are depressing, but the sound is sort of harsh in that sense, I think anyway.
20. Karen's Theme
The circumstances of how this song came about are not good at all. Richard wrote it for a biopic on Karen that he now regrets authorizing and participating in. But the song is really pretty. You can just hear elements of Karen's voice intertwined in the music.
