I finally received my new CDs from BMG. I've got eight that I can review for you, but I'll do this one first since I'm listening to it right now.
Cher
If I Could Turn Back Time - Greatest Hits
1999
1. Love And Understanding
Excellent single from 1991's "Love Hurts" album. I had actually never heard it before, and I now consider it one of her best. It peaked at #17 on the charts.
2. Save Up All Your Tears
This was Cher's personal choice to be the first single from "Love Hurts". It's a good song, but Love And Understanding sounds closer to single material to me.
3. The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)
Who did this originally? I forget. I know it was in one of Dave's recent polls...Anyway, I prefer this version. Another of my favorites from Cher.
4. After All (Love Theme From Chances Are) duet with Peter Cetera
I've always thought that Peter's voice sort of has to grow on you. He sounds almost nasal at times. But then again, some people don't like Cher's voice. It's just a matter of personal taste. Back to the song...This one went to #6. I like it.
5. If I Could Turn Back Time
My favorite Cher song of all time! In its day, the video to this song (which I'm sure you all remember) stirred up quite a bit of controversy. Actually, it got carted off to that infamous land of MTV nighttime airplay. And now there are videos ten times as "risque" being played at eight o'clock in the morning. Right...
6. Just Like Jesse James
Another great one. I remember this one from seeing Cher live. Excellent.
7. Heart Of Stone
This is actually a remix, but I can't remember the original!
8. I Found Someone
Produced and co-written by Michael Bolton! Two thumbs up on this track.
9. We All Sleep Alone
The original version of this song, which appears on the "Believe" album as well. The newer version is a dance tune though. This, obviously, is not.
10. Bang Bang
NOT the original 1966 version. This one, from '87 and produced by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child, has some really eerie background vocals.
11. Take Me Home
No, not disco! This is actually pretty good though.
12. Dark Lady
Listening to it here is the first time I was able to actually sit and listen to the song and hear all of the lyrics. Good. When this was originally released, it was accompanied by an early form animated music video, which aired on Sonny & Cher.
13. Half-Breed
Cool shout-out to Cher's Native American heritage. Word to your Cherokee mutha!
14. The Way of Love
This was originally recorded by Kathy Kirby, a Brit, in 1965. Doesn't do much for me.
15. Gyspys, Tramps and Thieves
Excellent.
16. I Got You Babe
What can be said? It's a classic! No Cher compilation is complete without this song. Love it!
