Hi everyone Today's album is The Rutles Released - 1978 Label - Warner Bros Produced by - Neil Innes Chart position - #63 Singles released - none CD reissue - 1990 with alternate cover(w/ Bonus Tracks) Label - Rhino CD artwork Track listing - Hold My Hand Number One With a Girl Like You I Must Be In love Ouch! Living In Hope Love Life NevertheLess Good Times Roll Doubleback Alley Cheese and Onions Another Day Piggy In The Middle Let's Be Natural - CD Bonus Tracks - Goose Step Mama* Baby Let Me Be* Blue Suede Shubert* Between Us* It's Looking Good* Get Up and Go* This is the soundtrack to the 1978 Beatle spoof mockumentary film All You Need is Cash telling the story of the pre fab four - Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry - The Rutles. It was a collaboration between Monty Python and the cast of Saturday Night Live . Neil Innes and Eric Idle wrote the story and Neil wrote all the tunes covering all periods of the Beatles music for example from the If I Fell soundalike With a Girl Like You to the Get Back sounding Get Up and Go. Neil also gave a brilliant performance as the John Lennon character Ron Nasty as did Eric playing the McCartney character Dirk McQuickly. I remember seeing parts of the film when it aired back then . I had a portable TV in my bedroom at the time and would sneek peaks . It was on at the same hour as my bedtime(9pm) so I never got to see it all until the mid 80's when I once again saw it on TV. Later on my brother found the video at a local video store and I made a copy. The film is now available on DVD. In the early 80's I was lucky to find a vinyl copy (with booklet) and in 1990 while shopping in Bellingham, Washington with my family I bought the CD reissue and was very happy with the job that Rhino did including every song that was used in the film . Rikki Fataar who toured in the early 70's playing drums with The Beach Boys and later with Bonnie Raitt played the Harrison character Stig O' Hara. And George himself has a cameo in the film as a TV reporter. The film is hilarious and a must see for all Beatles fans - the music is so well done! I hope you enjoyed my review

Excellent review, Ken!
I've wanted to see this movie for quite a while - it sounds like I would enjoy it a lot. I didn't realize Ricky Fataar had starred in it - that's interesting!
LOL at some of the song titles like 'Blue Suede Shubert'! ;D

Absolutely LOVE the film and album! I have the Rhino reissue and have it on both video and DVD.
Part of what makes it so great is not only is it hilarious comedy, but the songs themselves are just good rock songs! Get Up and Go sounds so much like Get Back, I fooled one friend into thinking it WAS Get Back!
Cheese and Onions sounds so much like Lennon, it has been passed off as a Lennon outtake on bootlegs!
Ouch! is a great Help spoof! Piggy in the Middle is also a great Walrus spoof!
The movie is great for anyone who loves the Beatles and especially if you have seen the British documentary, The Compleat Beatles.
Love the "shower for peace" scene!!
Great review!

One of my favorite movies of all time! To me, it ranks right up there with Spinal Tap among the great "Mock-umentaries". I'm always quoting this film (as if you couldn't tell already), and for some reason, I can picture the other Beatles, especially John, laughing hysterically over it, though Paul probably would have taken it too seriously..
All the songs are great, briliantly written by Neil Innes. I also have their "comeback" CD from '96, "Archaeology", done in the style of the Beatles Anthology, which had just come out.

I agree, Paul woulda probably been pissed, but I think I even read that John thought it was a riot! How is Archaeology?

I agree, Paul woulda probably been pissed, but I think I even read that John thought it was a riot! How is Archaeology? It's good. I got it for free as a promo when I worked in music retail. All the songs sound like Beatle songs, one of them even has a long Hey Jude-style fade out. And the first two songs segue together like Sgt. Pepper/With A Little Help... Oh, and another song ends with someone yelling "I've a bleedin' hangnail on me pinky!"

Thanks Adam - I remember reading in one of my Beatles bootleg reference books about Cheese and Onions. I have a clip of Neil singing it, I think it's the one , on Saturday Night Live

Great review! I love The Rutles and I still have it on tape. I remember when it first aired on TV in the 70's. And I watched it mainly because of the SNL cast and Eric Idol were in it. I knew they were spoofing the Beatles, but back then I didn't know much about the Beatles history, so I didn't catch all the humour in it. Then when I really started getting into the Beatles and their history as I got older. I watched it again and got all the references and it's f**king hilarious! I always enjoyed "Ouch" and "Let's Be Natural".

I saw this movie about 10 years ago. I didn't realize that an actual soundtrack had been released. I think Eric Idle is a genius!
