Alright, here it is! Your first choice! This compilation covers Heart's career from their first album all the way through their acousic endeavor, "The Road Home" in 1995.
Heart Heart/These Dreams - Heart's Greatest Hits 1997
1. Crazy On You Great acoustic intro, sounds almost country at first. Excellent guitar, although the lyrics don't do much for me. All in all though, really good song.
2. All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You This one was written by Robert "Mutt" Lange, aka Shania Twain's husband. He's a good songwriter, and this is another winner.
3. If Looks Could Kill Solid track, but a bit weaker than some of their others IMO.
4. Never I've always liked Heart's more pop-sounding songs, like this one. Still has plenty of the rock elements in it, but it's a little more mainstream. This was actually one of Heart's first big hits after Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier left the band. In fact, their subsequent album "Heart" went straight to number one and spawned this and three other top ten singles.
5. Alone Another big hit for Heart, and another of my favorites.
6. Who Will You Run To Written by Diane Warren and from the album "Bad Animals". Nice try, but I think that this one isn't quite rock enough, if that makes any sense.
7. Straight On (Acoustic) It's Heart, stripped! They'd be great live, I think. Anyone here ever seen them on stage before?
8. Magic Man Awesome guitar in this one! Love it.
9. What About Love My second favorite Heart song. It's got all the right elements, just enough of everything. Love it.
10. Dreamboat Annie Oh, this is the one that made people think that Ann and Nancy were lesbian lovers! Um...I still don't get that from the song, but whatever.
11. Dog And Butterfly (Acoustic) I'd like to hear the, er, plugged version of this.
12. Nothin' At All I'd never heard this one, and many others actually, until this compilation. I really like it.
13. Heartless Not bad, but not one of my favorites.
14. Stranded Ooo, a new favorite. Excellent! Love it.
15. Will You Be There (In The Morning) Another Mutt Lange song, and another new favorite!
16. These Dreams I've always loved this one. Like What About Love, it's just got all the right elements in all the right places. The lyrics are gorgeous without being overly sappy or anything.
17. Barracuda (Live) Live from The Centrum in Worcester, Massachussets on November 28, 1990. This one rocks harder than the album version. Very fast paced and a great inclusion to display the band's versatility.

As I mentioned in PM's, I have this collection-for free. It's a good collection-although spotty. There is a few forgotten tracks, and a few are "alternate" versions-live and acoustic. But that just makes the collection interesting! 10. Lora, it wasn't the song itself that caused the "lesbian" controversy-it was the album cover. They were photographed without tops (or at least appeared that way), standing next to another. One of the positives of this collection is that this is the "upbeat" version of the song, with the waves in the beginning. Their more current collection has the slow version, which I don't like as much. Very nice review!

I'm rather picky with Heart's catalog; let's see:
1. Crazy On You Their first and still one of their best. Super acoustic guitar and I LOVE the shout "LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES!!!!"
2. All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You I don't know why I even liked this a lot at the start. For a midtempo rocker, it was rather adult-friendly, yet very sexual in tone. Gimme Dobie Gray's original (different lyrics, however).
3. If Looks Could Kill Not bad, maybe my 2nd fave from the overrated 1985 album.
4. Never Liked this maybe the first 3 weeks it was out. After that, YUCK.
5. Alone Never liked this. Only hit my personal weekly top 10 because it was HUGE.
6. Who Will You Run To My fave post-'85 tune of theirs. Rather worthy.
7. Straight On (Acoustic) Nope. Original is MUCH better. Of course I'm not a big fan of "unplugged" music.
8. Magic Man First tune of theirs I knew. Always loved it.
9. What About Love To each their own. Hate this, especially the ending. Rather cool synth in the song's beginning, tho.
10. Dreamboat Annie Nice one.
11. Dog And Butterfly (Acoustic) The "plugged" version's still rather mellow. Not bad.
12. Nothin' At All No idea why, but in their overrated era, this one I DID like.
13. Heartless One I never hear enough.
14. Stranded Man, I DETEST this one. "Alone", part 2.
15. Will You Be There (In The Morning) They totally lost it with me by 1993/94. A top 40 hit, but this one probably won't even be in my next CRAZY top 10,000.
16. These Dreams Man, is this still WAY overplayed. Never a big fave.
17. Barracuda (Live) Good, credible live version. But I HATE the radio edit where the song fades! That guitar outro KICKS!

Like Dave, I'm picky when it comes to Heart, too.. I'd much rather hear their early rockers. The whole "80's Power Ballad" thing never really caught my fancy!
1. Crazy On You I like this song a lot, I figured out how to play the intro on guitar, and it's a lot of fun to get into that "groove"..
2. All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You No, just... NO!!!
3. If Looks Could Kill Not bad..
4. Never Of their 80's "comeback" hits, I like this one the most. It was the follow-up to "What About Love".
5. Alone Never liked it..
6. Who Will You Run To I always RUN when I see the name Dianne Warren.
7. Straight On (Acoustic) I'll stick to the original.. I guess the label that put this out (which I assume is Capitol) didn't have the rights to the Sony stuff.
8. Magic Man One of their best!
9. What About Love I remember when this came out. It was hyped as their big "comeback". Then I heard it and thought, "Oh No... a BALLAD..."
10. Dreamboat Annie Great song!
11. Dog And Butterfly (Acoustic) I like this one.
12. Nothin' At All One of their better 80's hits.
13. Heartless This one is OK..
16. These Dreams This girl I was in LOVE with in high school turned me down when I asked her to dance to this song.. Scarred for life..
17. Barracuda (Live) The fact that they didn't use the original version loses major points with me..

Very good review, Lora!
Many good songs on this CD, especially 70s cuts such as 'Crazy On You', 'Magic Man', and 'Heartless'. The acoustic versions and the live 'Barracuda' sound interesting - I don't think I've ever heard those versions.
I'm not quite as fond of their mid-late 80s material overall, but 'Never' and 'These Dreams' are both great.

Nice review Lora I've been a big fan of their's for a very long time Crazy On You , Barracuda , Dog and Butterfly ,These Dreams and especially Nothin' at All are just excellent. I remember really loving All I Want To Do is Make Love To You when I first heard it on the radio and it was the reason why I bought the Brigade CD shortly after.

Dave & Pete -
I've always loved power ballads. I don't why. I seem to like corny music, so it works for me.

I really liked your review. My sister was a hug fan of Heart growing up. She had some of their albums. I have mixed feelings about Heart. Some of their stuff I love and the rest I could take or leave. Here are the one's I love; Alone, These Dreams, Straight On, and Magic Man.

Nice review, Lora. I've been a big Heart fan since their first album. And to answer your question, I saw Heart in concert twice. Well, technically the second time was half a Heart. LOL! The first time was in the mid 80's. Big arena concert, and we were so far away from the stage we could barely see 'em. The second time was...hmm...sometime in the 90's...can't remember exactly. The concert was billed as "Heart Featuring Ann Wilson". I believe Nancy was either pregnant then or had just had a baby, and therefore wasn't touring. Anyway, it was a more intimate setting, and we could see the stage better, although it was disappointing not to have Nancy there. But, Ann still had the pipes and she could still rock out. Now, as for this album. I like most of the songs included here, but was never a big fan of "All I Wanna Do..." "Who Will You Run To" is ok, but not a favorite. And I agree with you about "If Looks Could Kill". Kind of a weak track. Everything else though--excellent!
