Dolly Parton
Ultimate Dolly Parton
2003
1. Joshua
This compilation is pretty much chronological, so it's only natural that it starts off with this track, Dolly's earliest #1 hit. Cute song! Actually though, I would've figured from the title that it was a biblical-inspired song. Obviously, it's not...
2. Coat Of Many Colors
From what I know about Dolly's upbringin, I'd say this song is autobiographical. Wonderful lyrics, but surprisingly, this is the only song on this disc that didn't reach #1 on the country charts.
3. Jolene
I always wondered what this song was about...I'd never heard it before now, can you believe that? I love it. Excellent guitar, excellent lyrics.
4. I Will Always Love You
Okay, here it comes. I think Dolly is a fantastic songwriter, and this is one of her finest masterpieces. BUT - her vocalization of this song is too simple and subtle for the depths that the lyrics parlay. Whitney Houston couldn't write a song like this even if she weren't on crack, but I'd much rather hear her sing it. I apologize to all Whitney haters.
5. Please Don't Stop Loving Me duet with Porter Wagoner
Gee, for all the legends I'd heard about Porter Wagoner, I would figure he'd have a better voice...Decent song, but not a favorite.
6. Love Is Like A Butterfly
Dolly's vocals here are very nice, but the song itself is lacking.
7. The Bargain Store
This song actually got banned from some radio stations. And consider some of the things they air now! I really like the symbolism in the lyrics.
8. Here You Come Again
Love it! This song made a big splash on the charts, going #1 on Country, #2 on Adult Contemporary, and #3 on Pop.
9. It's All Wrong, But It's All Right
This song drags a little too much for me.
10. Heartbreaker
Not bad.
11. I Really Got The Feeling
Eh, sappy song about having the feeling you're gonna love someone for a really long time. I've really started to dislike songs like this...
12. You're The Only One
This is better than the previous few tracks. Until that spoken verse. I never liked those.
13. Starting Over Again
Written by Donna Summer and Bruce Sudano. Great song, but I know I've heard another version of this before...I'm pretty sure it was Reba.
14. Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle To You
Here's another one with really good lyrics, but the accompaniment brings it down.
15. 9 to 5
Ah! This is, like, my favorite Dolly song! Love the movie too. This was #1 all across the board - Country, Pop, AC - and for good reason. I just love this song!
16. But You Know I Love You
After such a big hit, Dolly began trying to gear her music a little more into pop before going back into full-fledged country and back even further into bluegrass. This song debuted on the pop charts before even hitting the country charts, where it went to number one.
17. Tennessee Homesick Blues
This is actually from the movie Rhinestone! I like the yodeling - very cute - and the lyrics are perfectly Dolly. Great song.
18. Islands In The Stream duet with Kenny Rogers
As much as I dislike Kenny Rogers for no specific or legitimate reason, I do like this song. Bette and Dolly did a duet of this on Bette's show. Bette was in her mermaid suit, Dolly was fishing. It was adorable! Oh, and this song also went number one across the board.
19. To Know Him Is To Love Him Trio
This Phil Spector song is pleasant, but I can't hear enough of Dolly and Linda on it. Emmylou has lead vocals and, IMHO, she has the most mediocre voice of the three of them.
20. Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That
Love this one. Some of the lyrics sound kind of funny coming from Dolly though, like the part about the "little behind". Tee hee. I guess it's just me.
