Paula Abdul
Greatest Hits
2000
Wow, I had forgotten how old some of these tracks are. No wonder I remember them from my early childhood. Many of the songs on this disc are in their single versions. If it's otherwise, I'll let you know.
1. Straight Up
Although I like a lot of Paula's songs, I will concede that she is a better dancer than a singer. She does have some really good songs though and this is one of them.
2. Cold Hearted
This is the 7" edit. Some of you experts might be able to tell me what that means. I remember this video. The choreography is really stunning. I watched Paula's E! True Hollywood Story (stop laughing!) and fellow choreographer/dancer Gene Kelly was so impressed with Paula that she got to do a Pepsi commercial with him. Well, a younger version of him...Anyway, point is: she's god. If you can impress Gene Kelly, then you can die happy.
3. Forever Your Girl
Decent, but with this title I expected a ballad.
4. The Way That You Love Me
Another decent dance tune. You would think, though, that her style would be less repetitive.
5. Knocked Out
Passable.
6. Opposites Attract duet with The Wild Pair
And this video is what grabbed Gene Kelly's attention...
Another 7" edit. I'm used to the single version, so it was weird to hear the raps in it. I never knew until I got this collection who Paula's dueting partner actually was. The most memorable thing about this song, again, is the music video.
7. Bend Time Back 'Round
Not bad. The chorus repeats a little too much for me though.
8. Rush, Rush
Finally! A change of pace! I used to love this song when I was younger and then I didn't hear it again for years. It's now back up on my favorites list. It's one of my favorite ballads of the 90's. Also the 7" edit, by the way. Love the violin solo.
9. Promise Of A New Day
7" edit of another of my favorites by Paula, and yet another great video. Love the keyboards and especially the percussion in the intro. I believe it's a marimba...
10. Blowing Kisses In The Wind
Here's an edit also. Not a 7" one though. Just an "edit". So would that make it a 0"? I don't know... This is another ballad with great piano. Very nice.
11. Vibeology
This is the video edit. Hmm... I never saw this video, and I only heard the song like once before this, so I can't tell the difference. Another typical groove if you ask me, but this one isn't as appealing as some of the others.
12. My Love Is For Real featuring Ofra Haza
Don't know the album version of this either, but this is an R&B remix. The rhythm is great. Reminds me of TLC's CrazySexyCool sound. The rest of the track doesn't do much for me.
13. Crazy Cool
Alright, where's the Sexy? LOL. Oh, I found it. It's in the lyrics. Okay. Yeah. My comments here suck, and the song's not much better.
14. If I Were Your Girl
The third and final ballad on this compilation. Not bad, but not as good as the other two.
15. Megamix Medley
A dance medley of remixed versions of several of the songs on here. It's an interesting twist, but at just over nine minutes, it's WAY too lengthy for me.
16. Crazy Love
This one has the most annoying intro out of all of these tracks. The lyrics pretty much stink too. I'm not sure who Paula's male dueting partner is here. It doesn't say anything in the track info. Strange.
This will be a nice album to pull out every now and then and give a little listen to, but I definitely wouldn't make a habit of it. Not bad for mostly dance tunes though.
