Paul McCartney - CHOBA B CCCP: The Russian Album
"CHOBA B CCCP," translated from Russian to English is... "Back in the USSR!" Paul recorded this album over a two-day period in July 1987, to be released exclusively to the Soviet Union as an act of peace and friendship. In 1991, by popular demand, it was made available to the Western world. And no wonder it was, because this disc contains some good old-fashioned rock 'n roll FUN! Paul goes back to his roots to perform some of his favorite classic songs from his boyhood years in the 50's. I love every single track! The music just makes me feel good. And you can even hear Paul enjoying it as he sings. Here are the tunes:
1. Kansas City - Harder, more fast-paced than when Paul covered it during his Beatle days. The "hey hey, hey hey" bit is in this version. Added are the original lyrics, and some rockin' piano! Deleted is the "bye bye, bye bye" refrain at the end.
Well I might take a train... I might take a plane... and if I have to walk, you know I'm goin' just the same... I'm goin' to Kansas City... Kansas City here I come... you got some pretty little women there... I'm gonna get me one
2. Twenty Flight Rock - A fitting tune to include here. Back when he met John Lennon and the Quarrymen, Paul played this song, and they were impressed that he knew all the words, and of course the rest is history!
So I walk one two flight three flight four, five six seven flight eight flight more... up on the twelfth I'm starting to sag, fifteen before I'm ready to drag, I get to the top, and I'm too tired to rock
3. Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis Presley sang this one way back when. You can hear a hint of Elvis in Paul's voice here.
Well lawdy lawdy lawdy Miss Clawdy... gal, you sure look good to me... but please don’t excite me baby... I know it can’t be me
4. I'm In Love Again - Old Fats Domino tune. Paul really lets loose on this.
Yes it's me, and I'm in love again... I had no lovin' since I don't know when... you know I love you, yes I do, and I'm saving all my lovin' just for you... eenie meenie, miney-mo... told me you didn't want me 'round no more... Ooh-ee baby, woo-ooh-ee... baby don't you let your dog bite me... RUFF RUFF RUFF!
5. Bring It On Home To Me - Written by Sam Cooke, later covered by the Animals, among others.
If you ever... change your mind... about leavin', leavin' me behind... bring it here... bring your sweet lovin'... bring it on home to me, yeah... yeah... yeah
6. Lucille - Little Richard's song. Great drumbeats, and Paul wails like crazy! I really get into this.
Well I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight, asked my friends about it but all their lips were tight, Lucille... please come back where you belong... I'm speaking to you baby, singin' such a beautiful song
7. Don't Get Around Much Anymore - An old standard given a fresh rock beat.
Missed the Saturday dance... I might have gone but what for... it's awfully different without you... don't get around much anymore
8. I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday - Another oldie from Fats Domino. Great drums.
Well, I'm gonna be a wheel someday, I'm gonna be somebody, I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you... everything gonna go my way, I won't need nobody, I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you
9. That's All Right Mama - Paul doing his Elvis impersonation again. Great fun!
Well my Mama she done told me, my Papa done told me too... "Son, that gal you're fooling with, she ain't no good for you," well that's all right... that's all right... that's all right now Mama... any way you do
10. Summertime - Another standard. Paul's vocals shine here.
It's summertime... and the livin' is easy... the fish are jumpin'... and the garden is high... your daddy's rich... and your mama's good lookin'... so hush, hush little baby, don't... don't you cry
11. Ain't That A Shame - Yet another Fats Domino classic. This version really COOKS!
You made... me cry... when you said... goodbye, ain't that a shame... my tears fell like rain... ain't that a shame... you're the one to blame
12. Crackin' Up - Bo Diddley tune. Paul also performed it on "Tripping The Live Fantastic."
You're always hollerin' 'bout where I've been... you're always screamin' 'bout the money I spend... quit buggin' me... yeah yeah, he's crackin' up... yeah yeah, he's crackin' up
13. Just Because - One more Elvis tune. Almost sounds just like "Gonna Be A Wheel."
Just because you think you're so pretty... and just because your mama thinks you're hot... just because you think you got something... that nobody else has got... well you know you made me spend all my money, honey... you laughed and you called me old Santa Claus.. ooh, I'm telling you, baby, I'm through with you, because, well well well, just because
14. Midnight Special - This is the BEST version I've ever heard of it!
Wake up early in the morning... and the ding-dong ring... go a-walking to the table, I see the same damn thing... knife and fork upon the table... piece of paper in my hand... nothin' I can do about it... I get in trouble with the man, let the midnight special... shine the light on me... let the midnight special... shine its ever-lovin' light on me!
